Mottenotte v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Thu 05 May 2016 at 14:00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 88 runs
Match report
A fine sunny day and a pleasant location in Highgate, north London greeted the arrival of the Chelmer Veterans for this inaugural fixture with the unusually named Montenotte CC. We changed in comfort and having lost the toss, took to the field. Opening batsmen Fletcher and Plum took their place in the middle, where they were to spend the next two hours enjoying very favourable batting conditions.
The attack opened with skipper Jeff Gregory bowling beautifully for seven overs, conceding only 30 runs. From the other end, Alan Porter put in a very decent shift, his opening spell of seven overs being only slightly more expensive due to the batsmen both being strong to anything marginally short outside off stump. Chelmer were a couple of players short and although Montenotte kindly helped us out with a sub fielder, ten men were insufficient to stem the flow of boundaries.
An opening stand of 158 put us in something of a spot but as is often the way, when Plum became the first wicket to fall for a well-made 73, he was swiftly followed by two more as Salter and Whatley departed without scoring. Fletcher was still there, however, and his half-Nelson 111 effectively put the game firmly in the Montenotte corner. Ben Blythe, Paul Brown and Colin Blore all bowled well enough to stop things running completely away, until Montenotte called a halt on 230 for 5 from 36 overs.
Chelmer’s reply consisted of one ball fewer than the opposition’s, though we managed something just under half of their score. Opening the innings with Les Gray was the guest player from Montenotte, who started with the disadvantage of having to leave imminently. This he duly did without troubling the scorers, and the neutral spectator could have been forgiven that one or two other Chelmer players were playing under similar constraints, although there were some very fine performances from several players. Les Gray looked comfortable and eased to 18 before an attempted drive gave the bowler a sharp return catch.
Going in at the fall of the first wicket, Ted Woodgate showed what a doughty player he can be. He defended resolutely and was joined by Brian Robinson, who showed very similar qualities in keeping the bowlers at bay. Ted was unlucky to get an edge that popped from one catcher to another behind the wicket, bringing Colin Blore to join Brian Robinson in the best partnership of the innings, taking the score from 25 for 3 to 94 for 4. Brian kept an end going while Colin biffed and bashed his way to a very attractive 48 runs, in the course of which Brian was unfortunately run out for a responsible and chanceless 14.
Once Colin fell to a debateable LBW decision two runs short of what would have been a fine 50, there was not a great deal of hope that we would muster the 140 runs still required. Paul Brown batted with his usual confidence and skill in an undefeated 22, but with a man short we finished up on 113 for 9 from one ball under 36 overs.
There were some real positives about the fixture – the opposition were good company and certainly of a high standard. Montenotte’s Thai caterer provided a tea of oriental dishes, which made a welcome alternative to the usual fare, and the bar was well-stocked and well-attended afterwards. This was certainly an enjoyable fixture and one that we may hope to maintain in the future, ideally with 11 of our own players on hand.
