Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Stort Valley Veteran's on Tue 07 Jun 2016 at 13:30
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost 20 runs
Match report
In a 40 over match Chelmer took the field a man short due to a medical emergency. The Stort innings was opened by the short-lived McKay and the formidable Alexis “Viv” Jagdeo, who proceeded to plunder runs through the vacant deep point position down by the Woodham pavilion. No sooner had the gap been plugged than he chopped it to the third man boundary, racking up a swift 48 before finally holing out to Mark Rynn off the bowling of Ben Blythe.
Meanwhile, their equally reliable Asim had come in first wicket down and after a shaky start, he settled in and scored freely on his way to an impressive 62. After these two scores there wasn’t much left in the armoury and thanks to very economical spells from Jeff Gregory (2 for 35 from 8 overs), Paul Brown (2 for 29 from 8), Ben Blythe (1 for 22 from 8) and Dave Griffiths (2 for 16 from 6) we restricted Stort to a sub-par 154 for 8 from their 40 overs.
Charlie Lacey and Ken Hodges opened the reply and toddled along fairly sedately for the first 8 overs before the first wicket fell, bringing Dave Griffiths to the crease. This saw an acceleration in the run rate and at the 20 over drinks break, we were halfway there on 75 for 2.
Stort had obviously doctored the drinks, however, as Charlie Lacey was immediately out for 45, followed shortly afterwards by several middle order batsmen who got in then got out. The run rate hovered back to around 3.5 per over and it required a lusty 20 from Ben Blythe to bring the target back into play. Sadly though, the wicket proved to be a low, slow one, and it was very hard to get the bowling away. Stort certainly had had the better conditions for batting and with a man short we fell away to be all out for 134 and a defeat by 20 runs.
