Stort Valley Veteran's v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 03 Aug 2016 at 13:30
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by three wickets
Match report
Hockerill is a charming suburb of Bishops Stortford. Under the impression that the game was a 1.30pm start, Chelmer arrived to find a deserted pavilion with not even the local playgroup on hand to welcome us. When the opposition gradually arrived for what they believed to be a 2pm start, we got changed and trekked over to the far side of the ground where proceedings duly got underway.
Airplanes came and went to nearby Stansted but during a rare moment of blissful quiet, there was a loud sound of leather on willow as danger man Alexis “Viv” Jagdeo noisily snicked into the safe hands of Mark Rynn standing up to the wicket. Celebrations rang out, only for them to be dashed by an unmoved umpire.
As we struggled to suppress recollections of a similar controversy at Mill Hill in early 2015, “Viv” felt compelled to explain to us that he’d hit an unsuspecting piece of mud, which, like the magic bullet that dispatched President Kennedy, had miraculously flown up and recreated the exact same sound as a ball making contact with a bat.
Thankfully, on the next occasion that “Viv” was struck on the pad, the umpire’s conscience had overpowered him and he duly raised his finger, although “Viv” seemed under the impression that the ball would have missed the stumps, as did several of our close fielders.
Retribution paid, the baton passed to the number 3 bat, Waheer, a man with an excellent eye and unlovely technique. Bish-bashing his way to 57, he was removed by a fabulous yorker from Melvin John. This brought about a collapse with the remaining eight players amassing a meagre 35 runs between them to finish on 125 all out.
Bowling honours undoubtedly went to Melvin who returned the outstanding figures of 6 for 32 from 8 overs. Paul Brown did sterling work at the other end with 10 overs, 2 maidens and 2 for 31, aided by new boy Chris Baker’s 8 overs for just 17 runs.
Charlie Lacey and Colin Blore opened the reply. It was a slow-scoring pitch (or so Charlie claimed) with five of the first six overs being maidens. With one run on the board and Colin back in the hutch, things were not looking too clever but we had plenty of time and Chris Baker (23) and Charlie (18) nudged the score along. When these two left the crease it allowed Mark Rynn (29) to push things along, aided by Colin Cruickshank (20).
Once those two had gone, things were looking decidedly iffy around the 30th over, with only 80 odd runs on the board and five wickets down. Lo and behold, skipper Jeff Gregory had saved the best till last. In came Melvin John, whose entry in the score book reads as follows – 4 2 6 6 4 1 4 4 = Not Out 31 (8 balls). Now some might say there’s a single in there, but this was purely a necessity to get Melvin to the other end where he could finish the game in two more blows. Eight balls faced, eight scoring shots, game over. What a man!
The MoM committee debated long and hard but in the end they gave the award to the said Melvin John, for his bowling figures of 6 for 32 from 8 overs and 31 runs from 8 balls.
Surely the best all round performance of the season – well done Melvin!!
