Match report A rare treat this was for the villagers of Stock, their Sunday afternoon being lit up by the presence of two fine exponents of the noble game of cricket, Chelmer Veterans and the curiously-named Rainmen.

With no sign of rain, Chelmer opened proceedings in the shape of Charlie Lacey and Les Gray. Charlie was in belligerent mood and he took pleasure in despatching a few long-hops to the roadside boundary for his 37. Les dashed up and down for a sprightly 17 before Chris Bellamy emptied the bar with a rollicking 55 not out. He lashed the ball in all directions, his first 40 runs coming all in fours before he reached his 50, 44 of them via the boundary. At the end, Chris Baker made a very useful 21 to give us a respectable 161 for 6 from 35 overs.

Jeff Gregory (2 for 42 from 11 overs) and Chris Baker (2 for 29 from 5) bowled very tidily but sadly, the Rainmen proved to be far from wet, the opener McIlwayne clocking up an undefeated 91 in relatively quick time. He needed only moderate support from his team-mates in reaching the required total and a comfortable win by 5 wickets.

We were very pleased to have fielded a pretty decent side for this prestigious fixture, and on a Sunday to boot. We acquitted ourselves more than respectably and a jolly good time was had by all, but especially by Chris “Bellers” Bellamy. In the words of our wartime leader, “This was his finest hour”.
