Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Hertfordshire Over 60's on Tue 09 Aug 2016 at 13:30
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Woodham Mortimer is a pretty ground but it does have a few drawbacks, primarily a boundary that can be easily breached down the eastern slopes. To add to this irritant is the tendency for the ball to bury itself in the bracken and delay proceedings. Such was this afternoon when the Hertfordshire Over 60’s side found themselves in excellent batting form, all of their first five batsmen reaching double figures with Tyler (49) and Lockley (74) chief among them.
Jeff Gregory toiled away for 10 overs (1 for 68) with little reward while Paul Brown put in a shift for a very impressive 3 for 28 from 13 overs. Alan Porter performed his usual yeomanlike role, charging in and keeping the batsmen quiet without reaping the rewards his efforts deserved. With the opening three bowlers taking a well-earned breather, and seeking the element of surprise, the captain looked around for bowling reinforcements. His eye alighted upon a couple of unlikely figures, star batsmen Colin Blore and Mark Rynn. Each duly provided the desired variety, seldom delivering two balls that were alike, either in length or direction, though unfortunately often with the same outcome.
Herts accrued a healthy score of 197 for 6 from 40 overs and it was certainly a case of “Game On”.
In reply, Charlie Lacey faced the first ball of the innings. This was pulled for 2, before Charlie missed the next one and was bowled, returning to the pavilion with a strike rate of 200% and proof that statistics can never be trusted.
Coming in third ball of the innings at Number 3, Chris Bellamy gave a masterclass in the short arm pull and rattled along to 29 runs with 6 boundaries. This was just what was required and Les Gray (12) provided his usual calm air of stability at the other end before a most unfortunate run out cost Les an undoubted half century. The best was still to come, however, when Philip Pond and Colin Blore came together at the fall of the fourth wicket. Both players drove and defended in exactly the right proportions, singles interspersed with boundaries in equal number. Phil’s unbeaten 66 and Colin’s 58 not out were both innings of consummate skill, taking us past the Hertfordshire total in the 35th over.
This was an excellent day’s cricket and a top class team performance.
