North Weald v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 17 Aug 2016 at 14:00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 48 runs

Match report A hot day and an arid-looking square and outfield greeted us. Worse, there were far too many opposition players who looked at least 30 years short of a bus pass. We took the field and duly chased leather for much of the afternoon, tempering our joy at the fall of each wicket with the realisation that the next man in was an even better player.

The middle order batsmen returned a very healthy 146 runs between four players for the loss of 3 wickets. Several bowlers tried to impose some restraint, Paul Brown being the pick of them with 2 for 31 and 4 maidens in his 10 overs.

Parched and weary, we headed to the shade of the pavilion facing a daunting target of 202 for victory.

Les Gray and Charlie Lacey opened the innings but were unable to make much impression on the total with just one run coming from the first six overs. Charlie was bamboozled by the bespectacled Jagai – taking a few steps up to bowl, he sent the ball skywards on an improbable trajectory. Les fared better at the other end but was caught on 11, before Tim Cuerden (16) and Mark Rynn got things really moving.

The Brothers Rynn gave Chelmer a real chance of victory with some magnificent driving and dashing but both fell in quick succession to Elby.

Our tail wasn’t in wagging mood on this occasion and we were all out for 153.

The return match will be under far more pleasant conditions at Stock.
