Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v North Weald on Wed 07 Sep 2016 at 13:00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Following our heavy 48 run defeat at North Weald three weeks earlier, Chelmer were hoping to gain revenge at Stock in rather more pleasant conditions than in the previous encounter.
Colin Blore opened the innings with Les Gray and put together a magnificent century partnership. Jagai bowled his usual dolly-droppers that were an absolute devil to put a bat to, but Colin clubbed his way to a wonderful 67 with two sixes and eight fours. Les lashed a superb nine fours and a six in his 74 and there is no truth in the rumour that a van from the Blood Transfusion Service was seen making a delivery earlier in the day.
Not to be outdone, Mark Rynn hit a swashbuckling 45 n.o. with five fours and a six. Dave Griffiths chipped in with 22 and Phil Pond added a helpful 15 n.o. at the end to bring us up to a very impressive 256 for 4 declared. For the visitors, Wood’s figures of 3 for 46 from 8 overs were the pick of the bunch.
With North Weald’s batting strength, the declaration total was by no means excessive. Haworth and Ward looked impregnable until Mark Rynn outwitted Haworth with a demon delivery. Ginn (26) and Barton (34) made an impression while Ward continued on his way, eventually retiring for an unbeaten 100. Elby added 32 before demolishing his own wicket in his eagerness to benefit from another of Mark Rynn’s tempters. Finally, a batsman named Thrift proved to be anything but that, plundering five fours in an unbeaten 24 to close out the match on 258 for 4.
It was an excellent game of cricket with over 500 runs scored for the loss of 8 wickets. Congratulations are due to the groundsman.
