Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v East Hertfordshire Cavaliers on Wed 14 Sep 2016 at 13:00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Conditions were benign as usual in September at the home of cricket. The familiar figures of Stuck and Humphreys opened affairs for East Herts, working the ball away to the short boundary at worryingly frequent intervals. Alan Porter looked beseechingly at skipper Dave Griffiths, who granted him compassionate leave after a mere five overs and brought on the wiles of Martin Southwell. Melvin John kept up the adrenaline levels but even he relented and was removed from the attack after seven overs, to be replaced by Charlie Lacey, who had made the mistake of inadvertently making eye contact and exchanging pleasantries with Griff as they passed between overs.
The change of bowling surprisingly slowed down the scoring rate and Humphreys left the crease for 46 with the score at 67 for 1. This merely angered the batting gods, who sent in Baker, with both he and Stuck helping themselves to centuries before retiring unbeaten. We were delighted for Stuck, especially when he modestly revealed at tea that this was his two hundredth hundred.
There was no real need for much more batting and the innings closed on 281 for 3 from 42 overs. Melvin John’s figures of 2 for 48 from 12 and Martin Southwell’s 1 for 47 from 10 were commendable in the circumstances.
Few spectators would have given much for the chances of Chelmer overhauling such a mammoth total. Luckily there were few spectators present to express such pessimism and Griff sent in the two most attacking players he could find in the dressing room – they were also the only two he could find, the rest enjoying a hearty tea and hoping to be given umpiring duties.
Steve Rynn was unable to reproduce the century he had plundered for Purfleet on our ground a year earlier but at the other end, Colin Blore exploded into a fiesta of shots, regularly striking the ball over the neighbour’s hedge as well as onto a passing Fiesta. Tim Cuerden kept up the other end with an innings of twelve singles, mostly to give Colin the strike, and four boundaries just to show he had more in his armoury than clever tactics, finishing on 28.
This brought in Mark Rynn who found his batting boots and bludgeoned his way to a superb unbeaten 80. Colin Blore retired unbeaten on 134, leaving Melvin John and Dave Griffiths to keep up the momentum as we reached our target.
This was a memorable day for Chelmer, and in particular Colin Blore and Mark Rynn who mustered over 200 runs between them without the loss of either’s wicket. Awesome stuff, fellahs.
