Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Billericay on Wed 21 Sep 2016 at 13:00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 8 wkts

Match report After our previous encounter in July, which ended in a ten wicket defeat, Chelmer fielded a strong side to face their local rivals at Stock. A beautiful late summer’s day contrasted with the overcast conditions at Billericay. Alan Porter and Paul Brown led the attack and made an immediate breakthrough when Martin Southwell was bowled by Paul Brown without scoring.

At the other end, Wakefield enjoyed himself as much as usual when he faces us and following his unbeaten 91 in July, narrowly missed out on a century, falling to Melvin John on 96. Melvin celebrated with his customary panache and we are still hoping that a kindly neighbour will return the ball in time for the new season.

Paul Brown stole the bowling honours with a very commendable 4 for 22, Melvin finishing with 2 for 42 and Alan Porter 1 for 31.

Billericay declared somewhat generously on 185 for 7. Whether this was because of our previous performances, which had caused them little bother, or because they were overcome by feelings of goodwill, may be open to conjecture. Whatever lay behind their decision, Colin Blore showed no mercy and followed his century against East Herts the previous week by smashing his way to an unbeaten 103, Harry Atwell (26) and Graham Boxer (32) gave all the support that was necessary and we reached the target in 27 overs for the loss of just two wickets.

All in all, a very satisfying outcome, as many of our players seemed to be suggesting with commendable understatement.
