Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Old Victorians on Wed 29 Jul 2020 at 13-30
Match was Tied

Match report After a much longer winter break than anyone had envisaged, Veterans cricket returned to Stock Common. As if to celebrate, even the sunshine made a much more prolonged appearance than the forecasters had predicted.

Mindful of the delays that would be caused by the new sanitation regulations, skippers Rynn & Burke negotiated a 38-over match. Old Vics won the toss & elected to bat. The visitors made a steady start & reached 66-1 by the mid-innings break. Gregory & Cockrell both bowled tidily & without much luck for Chelmer Vets, with a couple of spilled catches not helping the fielding sides efforts. Old Vics pushed on after the break, & the next wicket didn't fall until the score had reached 141. Thereafter wickets fell regularly, although Douglas' 40 runs off 30 balls helped the visitors to reach 219 by the end of their allotted overs.

Chelmer Vets made a slightly quicker start to their innings, but lost more wickets reaching 77-3 by the break with the required run rate creeping up to 7.15. Rynn & Taylor pushed the score up to 132 before the 4th wicket fell in the 30th over.

Thus Streatfield came to the crease with a further 88 runs required at just above 10/over, albeit with Rynn well-set on 44. Rynn soon completed his 50, but was next to fall with the score on 201 and nine balls remaining.

Pond took a single off his 1st ball, reducing the equation to 18 required off 8 balls. Six further runs chipped away at the target, leaving 12 required from the last over & Streatfield on strike.
Four from the first ball tipped things in favour of Chelmer Vets.
The second ball saw Pond run out attempting a 2nd run, but crucially leaving Streatfield facing.
Seven required off four -- dot ball.
Seven required off three & Streatfield smote a mighty six into the road, bringing up his 50 in the process.
With just one run needed from the final two deliveries, Douglas held his nerve to deliver firstly a dot ball & then to bowl Streatfield with the final ball of the game.

Match tied.
And only the briefest of references to The Book of Cliches required before it could be declared that "Cricket was the winner!"
