Old Markonians v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 05 May 2021 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 83 runs
Match report
Chelmer Vets travelled to the bucolic surroundings of the wonderfully-named Bayford & Hertford Nondescripts CC -- however with one exception (see below), any further points of reference to the nostalgic & rose-tinted images of a quintessential English cricket match are null & void.
The air temperature was Baltic, the wind was icy & the rain interruptions were frequent -- and all of this was amplified by Covid restrictions rendering any possible warmth or shelter in the Pavilion as 'out of bounds'.
Griff lost the toss & CVCC were invited to bowl first. It was a joyless experience, with regular breaks when the heavier rains came & the bowlers reporting the proverbial "bar of soap". What started as a 40-over contest was reduced mid-innings to 35 overs. Two further points are worthy of mention :
1. all five CVCC bowlers returned remarkably similar figures from their respective stints ; and
2. in a hark back to one of the games great traditions, there was much mirth & absolutely no sympathy whatsoever when Alan Porter eschewed both the long & short barrier techniques & instead fielded the ball with his Gin Gans.
CVCC were left to chase 215 at an initial asking rate of just over 6/over. The rain did at least abate & was replaced with sunshine, but the wind remained & it got no warmer. The writing was probably on-the-wall when the three most prolific scorers in CVCC history (Messrs Gray, Rynn & Griffiths) amassed just a single run between them. Simon Cooper batted carefully for a well-deserved 50 & there were useful knocks from Graham Boxer & Paul Lowe -- it was good to see the latter back in action after missing the entirety of the truncated 2020 season.
