Match report
Old Victorians v, Chelmer Veterans, 18 May 2022 at Chingford CC
Chelmer Vets 256-4 (48 overs), Old Victorians 242-4 (40 overs) Match drawn.
On what was probably the hottest day of the season so far, skipper Griff won the toss and chose to bat first, to the obvious dismay of the Old Vics captain. Openers Richard Cory and Paul Lowe made a steady start reaching 45 after 9 overs before Cory nicked one to the keeper and was out for 34. Mark Rynn and Paul kept up the good run rate in a partnership of 55 before Paul was bowled for 20. Darren Smith helped add another 50 with Rynn before being next to nick off to the keeper who had a better day at holding catches than stopping byes. Rynn was out in the 34th over for a well-constructed 57, bringing Dave Griffiths in to bat with number 5 Melvin John, after the pair of first-change bowlers had sent down 13 overs each. Melvin tucked in to some looser deliveries from Old Vics 5th and 6th bowlers hitting 8 fours and 2 sixes in his 66 not out, putting on 98 in 15 overs with Griff who ended on 21 not out. Sadly, while batting, Chelmer Vets were the victims of a heinous crime as their dressing room was raided - not for wallets, phones and car keys - but an opportunist local moggy found and helped himself to Paul Lowe's chicken sandwiches!
After tea in the sunshine Chelmer Vets took to the field with only ten players, as a hungry Darren Smith had gone on a foray for food, perhaps hoping for a quick juicy steak sandwich in the nearby pub, but had to make do with a strawberry milkshake and a packet of cheesy puffs. It was clear that the Chelmer bowlers would have to work hard for their wickets. as the Old Vics innings began in a similar fashion to ours with the first batter nicking off for 19 in the 8th over with the score on 34. A big partnership on 121 then followed, before Mark Rynn bought the second wicket with a tempting flighted delivery that hit the stumps when the tired batter took a huge swing-and-a-miss. With ten of the last 20 overs left and 95 runs needed, Old Vics still had a chance, especially with a small boundary on one side of the wicket. It looked like Phil Bartlett had snuffed that chance out when he clean bowled two batsmen with consecutive balls, the first curving in to hit middle stump, the next on nipping off the seam to clip the top of the off peg. Sadly the hat-trick ball was struck for four as the new batsman used his youthful power and sharp eyes to smash 46 not out from 17 deliveries, taking his team into the last over with the possibility of a win still open. But Phil held his nerve and a couple of dot balls meant Old Vics could only reach 242 for 4, with just 7 extras in that total (compared to 45 from the oppo), not at all a bad bowling and fielding performance on a batsman-friendly pitch.
