Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v East Hertfordshire Cavaliers on Wed 22 Jun 2022 at 14-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 8 wkts
Match report
This week it was Chelmer Vets turn to be condemned to a hot afternoon in the sun fielding first in a 40-over match, as stand-in captain Mark Rynn continued his run of bad luck at the toss.
Four maidens in the first five overs from Chris Baker and Alan Porter set the tone for the innings and East Herts Cavaliers continued to find it hard to get the ball away. Once opener Blake was out lbw to Porter (25-1), the run-rate further stalled as the batting became more careful than cavalier, and although a second wicket didn't fall until the score had reached 91, 29 overs had by then been eaten up with Chelmer's all seam attack bowling accurately. A third wicket fell at 124 after the introduction of spinner Nilesh Patel - an unusual hit-wicket dismissal that not only clattered the stumps but also cleaved a bail neatly in two - but that was in the 36th over and left little opportunity for the batsmen to push on. East Herts' progress was further hampered as Nilesh hit the stumps himself twice and then in another of those rare cricket events, snared a fourth victim with a second hit-wicket that came in identical fashion to the first, minus the broken bail. East Herts ended on 146-7 which looked a well below-par score.
After tea, openers Richard Cory and Simon Cooper were greeted with slow bowling from each end, both found it hard to time the ball and both perished in the first 8 overs, Cooper on his return to the hutch describing the low, slow deliveries as 'shin music'! At 30 for 2 after ten overs Chelmer were not exactly racing away with the game but once the new pair Steve Adams and Paul Lowe settled in and the East Herts change bowlers came on, the game took a different complexion when frequent bad balls were dispatched to the boundary while the scoreboard also ticked over nicely with regular singles. An unbroken partnership of 123 in 23 overs with Steve hitting 15 fours in his 81 not out and Paul a solid 42 not out, saw Chelmer victorious by 8 wickets with 8 overs to spare.
