Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Two Counties - Over 60's on Wed 29 Jun 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 13 runs
Match report
The days prior to this game had been a real headache for the Chairman of selectors ( Well Griff) as a number of late withdrawals through injury and Cory once again accepting the call from Essex Over 50,s meant some last minute phone calls for help. Ed Oliver who had initially been rested as part of the rotation policy was recalled from his allotment and duly donned his keepers gloves. Stalwart Chris Southerby also answered the call to arms and at the l1th hour Griff called upon the ever dependable Simon Cooper who had been sidelined with a dodgy hamstring but also declared himself fit enough to play some part rather than leave the team short handed.
And so to the toss which Griff once again won and on a slightly over cast afternoon with the potential for some late showers elected to bat and take advantage of a dry wicket against a strong looking Two
Counties side.
Southerby and Cooper got the home side off to a steady start on a slowish wicket and an out field that acted like a twelth man.
Southerby got to his 50 but again perished shortly after which saw Mark Rynn join Simon in the middle.
Simon doggedly carried on reaching 88 before finally being dismissed LBW which was an amazing feat as at the beginning of the day he was still on the injured list. Mark Rynn again passed 50 and the innings eventually closed on 211 - 4.
Two Counties started their innings on a positive note with some early boundaries before Alan Porter in an excellent opening spell returned figures of 5-2-7-2.
Griff then turned to spin with himself and Nish Patel bowling through their allotted 8 overs apiece.. The skipper going for only 22 runs and Nish again turning the screw with another four wickets. Chelmer were then reduced to 10 players when John Woodrow was forced to leave the field with a troublesome back problem.
The match was reaching an exciting conclusion with the visitors number 8 going on the offensive ending on 62no but Chelmer held their nerve with Southerby and Baker closing the game out with the visitors falling short by 13 runs
