Match report CHELMER VETERANS AND RAINMEN POUR ON THE RUNS

Following record-breaking temperatures on the previous two days both teams enjoyed cooler conditions of a mere 27 degrees C to produce a downpour of runs in a 35-over game. Despite Griff's intensive efforts only nine Chelmer players eventually took the field, fortunately batting first.

Openers Chris Southerby and Simon Cooper made a steady start, taking a look at the bowling and seeding the innings with six runs an over, 72 for no loss at the first drinks break (12 overs). By the 15th over they had brought up a century partnership when Cooper was bowled by a slow delivery that seemed to have barely enough pace to knock off the bails. Andy Livett soon followed after a brisk 6 runs but Southerby powered on with a hailstorm of 14 fours and 4 sixes to retire on 101. Mark and Steve Rynn batted together until the 27th over when Mark was unlucky to be caught for 28 by a great grab at square leg. Paul Lowe added 43 with Steve before being stumped for a useful 25, 228 for 4, and a big last over yielded 17 runs, the elder Rynn ending on 44 not out, Chelmer Vets 255-4 from their 35 overs.

By now Chelmer's nine men included one walking wounded, and with it impossible to set an umbrella field, the Rainmen openers made a lightening-quick start, enjoying pace on the ball and gaps a-plenty to score 80 in the first ten overs, storming on to a hundred partnership before a good catch by Southerby snared a welcome first wicket off the bowling of George Edwards. No sign of a run-drought followed, despite the occasional excellent delivery from Jeff Gregory, back in Essex to enjoy the Spanish-style weather. The batsmen continued to give it some wellie, thundering to 160 from 20 overs by which time the no.3 bat had holed out in the deep, picking out Mark Rynn off brother Steve's bowling. Fortunately, a fine spell of bowling from Chris Southerby helped to reduce the flow of runs to a relative drizzle, which also precipitated a small collapse as Rainmen's chances of a win began to vapourise. Chelmer were also boosted by the late arrival of Darren Smith, another walking wounded plugging a gap at gully replacing Edwards who had to leave early to play in another game. Chris's 7 overs, 1 maiden, 2 for 21 and Steve Rynn's 7 overs, 3 for 36 put the dampers on the innings and Rainmen ended on 233-9 as dark clouds gathered in the sky.
