Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Eastwood Vets on Wed 27 Jul 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 12 runs

Match report CHELMER'S MAGNIFICENT NINE FALL SHORT BY A DIRTY DOZEN

A rare lost toss meant that nine-man Chelmer Veterans were asked to field first against a full Eastwood Veterans eleven, so it was clearly going to be an afternoon where true grit would be needed, even on a day without the recent blazing sunshine at high noon.

Spanish Jeff Gregory and Sheriff Dave Griffiths opened the bowling, keeping it tight for ten overs, conceding only 38 runs. Next ball, Ed Oliver was able to walk tall, pulling off a sharp legside stumping for the first wicket. This brought Chelmer regular Simon Cooper to the crease for Eastwood, who are clearly paying him a few dollars more. And it was aces high for Simon and partner Steve Huckstepp who had moved the score to 169 when the opener retired 100 not out having found the boundary 19 times. Simon cleverly manoeuvered the bowling into the gaps in the field as the Chelmer out-cricket developed a touch of the good, the bad and the ugly, unable to either plug the boundaries or cut off singles while a man short, despite Eastwood's sporting supply of a stand-in. Ignoring some banter involving a mobility scooter and being dinged by a hard shot from a team-mate, Cooper moved from 50 to 100 with just three further dot balls faced, and a big last over took Eastwood to 256 from their forty.

After tea, Chelmer openers Chris Southerby and Mark Stratton started the reply, which would need to be something of a shoot-out. The scoreboard was soon rattling but Southerby must have felt he had one foot in hell when he nicked off for 11 to a good ball early in the fifth over. Mark Rynn soon followed, well caught in the deep for 13, leaving gun-slinger Stratton and Paul Lowe to build Chelmer's largest partnership of 127, ending only when Mark retired unbeaten on 101. Paul and Griff batted well together but once Paul was stumped for 48 the innings began going south. Gary Thomas kept faint hopes alive with a quick 17 but when Ed Oliver joined Griff at the crease it was more 'Carry on Cowboy' than 'The Wild Bunch' as boundaries and Chelmer's hopes of a win dried up, the skipper finally falling for 39, well caught by that man Cooper off the last ball of the match, 12 runs short of Eastwood's score.

But it was a very enjoyable game played in a great spirit, so its now a case of paint your wagon, or maybe stagecoach, for next week's trip to Hockerill.
