Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 5 wkts

Match report With the luxury of 11 players for the first time in a number of weeks supported by stalwart Mike Long and the addition of Wayne Morgan making his long awaited debut hope's were high as we travelled to Hockerill on another hot and increasingly humid afternoon.
As the captains met in the middle of what appeared to resemble an oasis set in the middle of the Sahara desert a gentleman's agreement was reached that as the home side were fielding a couple of sprightly youngsters Griff would be given the option without the need of the customary coin toss and duly elected to bat first to the relief of his team mates. The question was looking at this green tinged strip was the outcome going to be a magic carpet ride or a bizarre ending??
As the innings got under way it became clear this was not going to be a stroll in the park and with some tight bowling and disciplined fielding with younger legs making runs hard to come by clearly evident with openers Southerby and Cooper facing seven and fourteen balls respectively before both were able to get off the mark.
At 20 overs the visitors were 79 - 0 and looking to push on with Southerby reaching his fifty with an impressive six before trying to repeat the shot only to be caught with a well judged catch at deep mid on. This brought Mark Rynn to the crease but then saw Cooper also fall to a catch behind when on a hard fought 40. Paul Lowe then joined Rynn and together began a counter attack which saw a solid partnership form before Rynn was bowled by the speedy colt for 47.Griff joined Paul for the last over adding 7 to the tally and Paul n.o on 54 saw the visitors post what looked like an unlikely 230 - 3 at the start but could have been more had it not been for some young legs in the field restricting potential boundary shots throughout.
Hockerill in reply got off to a swift start with the openers pouncing on any loose deliveries which saw runs coming a plenty. Captain Waheed never looked troubled and played attacking shots throughout his unbeated innings of 88. When the first wicket fell to Porter with a well taken catch by Morgan relief was only short lived as the aggressive number three Elby sought to attack from ball one hitting a number of sixes the biggest off Griff which saw the ball well on its way to Bishop Stortford Town centre!
Griff eventually got his revenge changing to an around the wicket approach seeing Baker snare a catch a extra cover and Elby going for a quick fire 46. With Waheed still at the other end the incoming batsmen continued to keep the score ticking over and were well up with the required run rate and no luck going the bowlers way with a number of edges all finding the boundary.
Despite the bowlers toiling away under the scorching sun they were unable to take necessary wickets and the homeside eventually reached the target finishing on 235 - 5.
Griff as always asked if anything could have been done differently and the resounding answer was other than having younger legs in the field then probably No....
And so onto next week when we again face the auld enemy Billericay.
