Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Billericay on Wed 10 Aug 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 23 runs

Match report On a day when the sad passing was announced of the author and illustrator Raymond Briggs, the Chelmer team assembled to play Billericay at Stock, the afternoon hot enough to melt any snowman in double-quick time. The lads must have thought Griff was Father Christmas as he won another toss, sentencing Billericay to field first in the heat.

Opening pair Chris Southerby and Simon Cooper made a very solid start scoring 91 inside 16 overs before Southerby picked out a fielder on the boundary and was caught for 57. Sadly, his powerful shot broke the catcher's finger rendering him unable to take further part in the match, now shortened to 38 overs due to the delay attending to the injury. With Cooper, Steve Adams added 122 for the second wicket but was bowled for 53 in the 32nd over with the score on 213. At 229 Simon retired having crafted yet another century, obviously enjoying it when the wind blows hot. With six overs left the Chelmer batters tried to push the score on with varying degrees of success, Nilesh Patel hit a quick 16 but wickets tumbled regularly with Gary Brown completing a 5-fer with three victims in the last over as Chelmer ended on a respectable 259 for 8 in 38 overs, and everyone had a bat.

After tea, Billericay openers Santosh Mehotra and Brown (of 5-wicket fame) made a good start, adding 98 in 19 overs before Mehotra was caught Bartlett, bowled Patel off a leading edge. Brown and Paul Wakefield kept up the required run rate and looked capable of taking Billericay to a win, reaching 188 with seven overs left. But Chris Southerby, reverting to seam-up, was their bogeyman in the 31st over, bowling set batsman Wakefield with a dipping yorker, then repeating the feat twice in the over to leave Billericay both behind the run rate and short of gun batters. Notably, junior Cory Chris made an excellent job of fielding in place of Simon Cooper who managed to tweak a hamstring and calf while batting. Southers and Phil Bartlett bowled out the remaining overs, keeping a lid on the scoring as Billericay finished on 233 for 5, Gary Brown capping his day with an unbeaten maiden century to go with his earlier five wickets. Surely only cricket can be a game cruel enough for such a performance to end on the losing side.
