Old Markonians v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 03 May 2023 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 44 runs

Match report It was good at last to start the Chelmer Veterans cricket season but slightly disappointing to lose away to Old Markonians at Bayford and Hertford CC, the defeat potentially a costly one as both Simon Cooper and Mark Rynn suffered injuries.

Winning the toss, nobody complained when Griff decided to field first on a very green early-season wicket that looked like it might be tricky to bat on. The home side made a solid start reaching 31 in the 6th over when the skipper took two wickets in two balls, first hitting the stumps and then removing the dangerous Elby plumb lbw. Sadly, Chelmer were unable to capitalise on the breakthrough and at drinks (20 overs) Markonians were 104-2, the ball sitting up to be worked into the legside whenever short or even off a good length. The third wicket partnership somehow added 113, ended in the 27th over when Griff caught one of the many top-edged shots, most of which had fallen safely into empty space, Nilesh this time collecting a wicket. From here on (apart from a couple of costly overs) it felt like Chelmer contained the situation quite well, especially when down to nine fit fielders with Mark Rynn off the field patching up a split web (good catch though!) and Simon Cooper virtually immobilised with a possible knee ligament injury. Old Markonians ended their 40 overs on 228 for 7.

Openers Richard Cory and Mark Stratton made an excellent start to the Chelmer reply, reaching 68 in the 11th over when Stratts was caught for a brisk 29 from 33 balls. Mark Rynn, hampered by his injured hand, was bowled next ball as our innings mimicked the opposition by losing the first two wickets in two deliveries after a bright start. But Cory and Paul Lowe steadied the ship, adding 41 in 46 balls before Paul was lbw for 11. With opener Cory at the crease Chelmer were still well in the game despite the run rate slowly creeping up, but when he was bowled for 79 (77 balls) at the end of the 27th over, 83 were still needed from 13 overs. With little pace on the ball and even less off the pitch, this proved too tall an order. Griff made 34 but after he was out at 179 the total inched to 184 when the last four wickets fell in the space of six deliveries for no score added, the wag-less tail was mopped up leaving Old Markonians the winners by 44 runs. Onwards to next week!
