Old Victorians v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 24 May 2023 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts

Match report After the recent inclement weather summer appeared to have arrived as the second outing of the new campaign saw us visit Chingford to play Old Victorians. As is the norm oppo captain Bill Burke elected to play a time game with the final 20 overs from 5.30pm. The toss won by the home side and came as no surprise as they chose to bat on a good looking track.
Opening the attack with Chris Baker and guest Paul Fisk saw them make early inroads with the ball seaming nicely. Bakes bowling the dangerous Kadir for 5 and then the effervescent Cory taking a smart catch at slip off Fisky getting rid of the other opener Blake for 14.
The game then saw the home sides two top batsmen Shah and Butt enter the fray with Shah apparently having played first class cricket in Pakistan! They then both demonstrated some punishing stroke play which saw the run rate increase. Both the skipper and Mark Taylor attempted to restrain these two shot makers but both continued to punish any loose delivery. Mark Stratton came on to replace Mark and ended with excellent figures of 8-2-23-1. The skipper finally dismissed Shah for 61 coming round the wicket and taking out the leg stump with a full delivery!
Butt continued to amass runs and having reached his century came as a surprise when he remained at the crease which caused some constination among the visitors.
The home side declared on 226 - 5 with Butt 112no.
With regular Simon Cooper still absent with a knee injury the visitors opening pair of Cory and Stratton set about chasing down the target against some very slow paced but awkward bowling.
Richard was caught on 23 which saw the return of the ever reliable Sutherby to then see him and Stratts put on a 100 run partnership swinging the game in the visitors favour. Just when they both looked like reaching the target Suthers was bowled for 60. A couple of quick further wickets then fell and when Stratts was bowled for 69 things began to look a little less comfortable.
Melvin John as enthusiastic as ever strolled to the creased and set about taking the fight back to Old Vics amassing a quick fire 44no to see the visitors home with six overs to spare on 227-5 and with unbroken sunshine all afternoon the season is at last up and running.
