Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Eastwood Vets on Wed 26 Jul 2023 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 104 runs

Match report On the occasion of veteran rock star Mick Jagger's 80th birthday, the dice were not tumbling in Chelmer Veterans' favour as their 8-match winning streak was emphatically ended by Eastwood Veterans. For both teams, it was a case of 'Miss You' as the ever-popular Simon Cooper was again sadly absent through injury.

You can't always get what you want, and so it proved as Griff lost the toss and the home side were condemned to field first in the afternoon sun. A watchful start by openers Palmer and Lovatt was converted into a very solid platform, 107 for 0 at drinks with one or two chances having gone astray. At 116 Griff had the satisfaction of a double strike, a good take and stumping removing Palmer, then no.3 Mitchell was bowled first ball after a long wait with the pads on. When Mark Stratton bowled Lovatt with an excellent delivery also with the score on 116 and Griff had no.5 Clark caught by Strats at 129 in the 27th over, Chelmer were doing their best to put Eastwood under their thumb. But the rather junior veteran Fullerton and proper veteran Huckstepp proceeded to not fade away, smashing 112 runs in the last ten overs to leave the Chelmer side needing an emotional rescue, somewhat shell-shocked to concede 253 for 5 from 40 overs, with a consolation wicket for Graham Boxer off the last ball.

After tea (with plenty of brown sugar), Chelmer knew their innings would need a good start-me-up, which unfortunately did not materialise as the home side were well and truly knocked off of their cloud, partly by their own hand with a needless run-out and a hit wicket contributing to a poor beginning, 9 for 2 in the fourth over. Eastwood spared no charity as wickets fell with grim regularity and at 49 for 6 in the fourteenth over it was effectively all over now for Chelmer. But wild horses could not drag skipper Griff from the crease until he had struck 71 to give the score a semblance of respectability, adding 38 with Paul Marshall who became the second Chelmer player out 'hit wicket', and 31 for the ninth wicket, including Chelmer's third all-run four of the season (so far) with Ed Oliver who was left waiting on a friend when last man Alan Porter chipped one up to be caught, the home side 150 all out with nearly ten overs going unused.

Doubtless Eastwood spent the night together celebrating in the pub, Chelmer, out of time this week will regroup and bounce back like the indestructible Keith Richards - 'cos we like it, like it, yes we do!
