Match report Despite the presence of the Rainmen at Stock, it was, in fact, a hot sunny afternoon and a good toss for Griff to win and bat first.

Openers Chris Sutherby and Rich Cory were untroubled by the bowling, racing along at six an over, just missing out on a century partnership when Suthers retired, having passed 50 with the score on 99. Rich soon followed, bowled for 45, and the rest of the innings was built around Anand Patil's classy and patient 53 before he too retired, notably adding 45 with Phil Bartlett who ended 33 not out, witnessing a Chris Baker cameo of 16 not out from 13 balls at the end. Sadly, we lost Paul Marshall along the way, retired hurt with a painfully pulled thigh muscle that left him unable to field or bowl.

The ten remaining Chelmer Veterans were to defend their total of 223 for 9 from 40 overs, Rainmen hoping that their tactic of providing a first-class tea would induce some overindulgence that might give the bowlers indigestion. But it seems that the Chelmer players are excellent eaters, opening bowlers Chris Baker and Sean Elliot, fortified rather than hampered by the impressive spread, demolished the batting as well as the sandwiches and cakes, reducing the opposition to 13 for 6 after 11 overs, effectively ending the contest. The Rainmen hung on grimly for a while, but Griff picked up 3 for 19 (after Bakes's 3 for 6 and Sean's 2 for 7) as the innings ended on 45 all out after just 24.4 overs, a thumping win by 178 runs.
