Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Old Victorians on Wed 30 Aug 2023 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 35 runs
Match report
Another day, another winning toss with Griff's lucky coin, and Chelmer Veterans again batted first in the sunshine, this week against Old Victorians.
Openers Chris Sutherby and Rich Cory added 19 in the first four overs, but then Rich's run of bad luck continued as he chopped on, missing out against some slow bowling. Anand Patil joined Suthers, pushing the score along to 61 before Suthers was bowled for 41. Paul Lowe was next to go, nicking off for 6, but that was the last Chelmer wicket to fall as Anand and Jarrod Dowling made it to drinks, 116 for 3 at the halfway point. The pair continued, untroubled, until in a nightmare scenario for the scorer, both batters retired simultaneously after 36 overs, Anand on 73, Jarrod 85 in a partnership of 148, sportingly allowing Griff and Graham Boxer to have a bat. Neither disappointed, unbeaten at the end as Chelmer finished on 263 for 3 from 40 overs. A decent score, but possibly within reach of the Old Vics batting line-up, some of whom were not particularly old.
The Chelmer bowlers started well, as Chris Baker removed the normally prolific Kadir for 4, aided by a smart Suthers catch, then Alex Cory induced Blake to nick off in the corridor of uncertainty, gleefully caught by Ed Oliver. Vics were well behind the run-rate at drinks but quickly picked things up with some huge sixes from skipper AJ Shazad, before he was caught behind for 52, Griff's third wicket. Ajay Sahni took up the challenge with more hitting, forcing Chelmer to unleash the bowling of Jarrod, sadly in his last vets' game before returning to Australia. A quick yorker duly despatched the batsman and made the game safe for Chelmer, although a big last over took Vics a bit nearer to the target, ending on 228 for 6, the home side winning by 35 runs.
