Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v East Hertfordshire Cavaliers on Wed 06 Sep 2023 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 78 runs

Match report On one of the hottest days of the year, Griff once again won the toss and chose to bat, thus saving his side from a roasting afternoon in the field.

A new opening pair, Glenn Hylton and Anand Patil both fell early, trying to force the pace against some very slow bowling, 12 for 2 in the 6th over was not the best start. But Mark Rynn buckled down to play the anchor role while Chris Westwood pushed the score along quickly, dispatching balls to the boundary with ruthless efficiency. Chris raced to retirement on 101 from 58 balls (14 fours, 4 sixes), putting on 134 with Mark in just 17.4 overs. Ten from Paul Lowe was followed by Griff's 24 from 21 balls as the overs ticked down, the skipper out at 230 for 4 in the 38th over while Rynn continued accumulating in the draining heat, ending on 79 not out having batted for most of the 40 overs, an important knock for his side, the innings closing on 243 for 4.

After some tea-time rehydration the Chelmer bowlers made a tight start, Sean Elliot's inswingers proving hard to hit and Alan Porter instantly back in the groove after three weeks away. An early wicket for each bowler added to the slow run rate to quickly put the home side on top, so much so that Chelmer could afford to sportingly re-instate the no.4 bat when he unluckily slipped mid-pitch, run out while stranded on his back. The second pair of East Herts batters added a healthy partner but continued to slide behind the required rate, and when they were both caught off Nilesh and Griff respectively, a lot rested on the shoulders of the big-hitting Shazad, who scored 33 before hitting one to square leg, nonchalantly caught inside the boundary by Paul Lowe who didn't need to move his feet an inch to complete the dismissal. With that went East Herts now slim chance of a win, and an enforced bowling change brought Anand a wicket with his first ball hitting the stumps - a feat he quickly repeated. In the end, the Cavaliers were 165 for 7 from 40 overs, Chelmer winning by a convincing 78 runs.
