Match report The days in the lead up to the match had certainly caused the Chairman of selectors a few headaches with player availability being a major concern not aided by the late withdrawal of two players from the line up with injury and health concerns and the untimely retirement from cricket by Chris Sutherby on Monday evening!
So on match day we managed to take to the field with 10 aided by 17 Yr old Wesley John ( son of Melvin) Iqbal captain of Essex O60, s and Ian Goodrich of Rettendon.
On a beautiful sunny afternoon at the stunning setting of Chingford CC East Herts Cavaliers won the toss and not surprisingly elected to bat with a start time of 1215 and 15 overs from 5pm and on paper this was going to be a challenging afternoon.
The ever reliable Chris Baker opened the attack joined by the youthful Wesley John and despite their best efforts the home side openers got just reward for playing shots on what resembled a billiard table outfield and accumulated runs at regular intervals with the run rate in excess of five runs per over it was time for guest Iqbal and skipper Griff to attempt to stem the runs. Iqbal then struck removing openers Kadir 37 and Freeman 67.This then saw Ayaz Shah take to the crease having played regular Grade A cricket in Pakistan. His stay however was short lived when he was bowled by Griff for 5.Wickets continued to fall with the dangerous Wright and Blake both being bowled cheaply by the impressive Iqbal. Thornton then rallied for the homeside ending on 51no with some late big hitting and the home side declaring on 215-5.
Tea was taken with a thirty minute break and Chelmer began their reply at 3.30pm with the final 15 overs to commence at 5pm.
Melvin now in his accustomed opening slot was joined by Ian and the pair got off to a confident start. Ian had reached 36 when he was bowled by Topey. Melvin continued accumulating runs at ease joined by Mark Rynn who having reached 16 was caught attempting a big hit. Iqbal came to the crease and showed his ability with the bat as well before being bowled for 22.In the meantime Melvin reached the milestone of his first Chelmer ton and duly retired 100 no. Graham and the skipper then saw the visitors home with an impressive win by six wickets on a very enjoyable afternoons cricket.
