Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Old Markonians on Wed 03 Jul 2024 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 7 wkts

Match report Thanks to the sterling efforts of Griff and Graham Boxer, eleven cricketers took to the field for Chelmer Veterans on general election eve, when only eight candidates had been on the paper the previous day. Many thanks to Arslan Ahmed from Tillingham, and James Brown and George Thurnell from Galleywood for stepping in.

Sadly, rain greeted the players in the middle as Chelmer chose to bowl first, but rather than look like a drenched Prime Minister, the Veterans wisely headed back to the changing rooms until it blew over.

Opening bowlers Chris Baker (Father of the House) and the long-serving Alan Porter, quickly reduced the visiting Old Markonians to 10 for 2 in five overs, with a wicket each and good catches held by Griff and Mark Rynn. This seemed the spark for Marko Jergic and Simon Baulcomb to abandon a conservative approach, both their innings' liberally sprinkled with boundaries as the ball was despatched with a straight bat by one, and a more cross-bench style from the other. The pair added 87 in 17 overs before Baulcomb holed out on the boundary, well held by Glenn Hylton. After more lurching to the left, Jergic fell 17 runs later, well caught in the deep by Charlie Hylton. Now, the Markonians batting became more laboured, helping to save keeper Ed Oliver's red face after he had dropped a simple Jergic skyer. The visitors now found batting a bit more taxing as new bowlers Thurnwell, Brown, and Hylton junior all returned tidy spells. Aided by one big over, Old Markonians finished their 40 overs on 178 for 5, the occasion marked by a flypast from a Chinook helicopter, rather larger than the red kite spotted last week.

After tea, there was no debate about who should open the batting for Chelmer, and Glenn Hylton took a back bench while Arslan Ahmed had the majority of the strike, proving that the pitch was no green-top by dispatching the ball to all parts, causing at least one bowler to go blue in the face. 85 had been scored before Hylton was stumped off the tricky Swain. Mark Rynn kept Arslan company for five overs until the latter nicked off for 83, the cricket equivalent of a great maiden speech. Rynn fell to another stumping and it was left to Charlie Hylton (23 not out) and skipper Griff (32 not out) to see Chelmer over the winning line in 30 overs, a seven-wicket win at the final count. Another good team performance with the contributions from the new players worthy of a party of their own.
