Billericay v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Thu 18 Jul 2024 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 130 runs
Match report
On an afternoon when summer returned Griff won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat on a sublime Billericay wicket.
Openers Cory and Melvin got off to a positive start with Melvin scoring readily and Cory steading the ship at the other end.
With the introduction of Wakefield taking the pace off the ball Cory was surprisingly adjudged LBW for 38 and was replaced by the attacking minded Arslan Ahmed who took no time to dispatch the ball to all parts of the Blunts Wall ground. Melvin became Wakefield s second LBW victim for a well made 77. Paul Lowe then joined Arslan who continued to entertain stricking 3 big sixes to the longest boundaries and on 91 was eventually bowled by Brown but by now the damage had been done. Paul crafted a well made 25 and Mark Rynn 15 with the innings closing on 274 - 5 probably Chelmers highest score in a 40 overs game!
Billericay began their reply in earnest but got off to the worst possible start when the dangerous left handed Wakefield took off for a quick single but was superbly run out by newbie James Brown with a direct hit for a duck. This was clearly going to make chasing 274 extremely difficult but the other opener Eddy seemed undeterred adopting a positive mindset and resulted in a flourish of boundaries requiring skipper Griff to introduce the returning Strats and himself to take the pace off. This paid immediate dividends with Strats bowling Farmer for 2 and Griff bowling Paul Marshall for 4. Griff then got rid of the dangerous Eddy on 55 with a caught and bowled dismissal which the batter couldn't have hit any harder and could only smile in disbelief as it was pouched by the skipper and effectively ended any further resistance! Chris Baker returned to take a well deserved wicket and abily assisted by James Brown with two wickets.. Arslan proving he can bowl as well with a wicket and the icing on the cake with Cory coming on in the 40th over to take the final wicket and his nemesis Mike Smith ending in a 130 run victory for the visitors!.
