Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Eastwood Vets on Wed 31 Jul 2024 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts

Match report The Chelmer Veterans cricket match against Eastwood Veterans may have been inspired by the Olympic ideals of excellence, friendship and respect, but on this occasion the opening ceremony consisted of the two captains wandering out to the middle, tossing a coin, and condemning Chelmer to a hot afternoon in the field. However, it has to be said that the game was played in the appropriate Olympic spirit.

Long-serving flag bearers Chris Baker and Alan Porter opened the bowling and restricted Eastwood to 30 for 2 in 9 overs with a bonus run out by Graham Boxer and a sharp, some would say gymnastic catch by Chris Sutherby. Sadly, Alan then hurt his knee, hampering the rest of his afternoon in the field, but he kept the flame burning to carry on to the end. Opener Palmer and no.4 Huckstepp, a familiar arrow in the Chelmer side, added 63 taking the score to 93 in 25 overs, providing a platform for Eastwood to high-dive towards a big score. But Chelmer tightened the rings by taking regular wickets, Paul Marshall and Griff hitting the stumps three times and Suthers taking another catch of equal quality to his first. While Huckstepp was still in, Eastwood always had the potential for quick runs, until Graham Boxer tempted him down the wicket for Ed Oliver to complete the stumping, 130 for 7 with 6 overs to go. The Eastwood torch failed to burn any brighter, the innings closing on 151 for 8 in 40 overs, Griff taking the laurels with 6 overs, 3 for 14, Baker and Marshall both 7 overs for 21 with 1 and 2 wickets respectively.

With the long-term closure of the village catering facilities, 22 finely-honed athletes scoffed their own teas before Chelmer began their reply. The batting 'worm' closely matched Eastwood's for the first 15 overs, 50 for 2 with the losses of Melvin John and Mark Rynn. Griff kept the prolific Suthers company for 13 overs adding 58. Guest youngster Ashton Davey, who kindly stepped in at the last minute, played a mature and fearless innings of 13 while Suthers went on to 82 before getting a good nut from leg spinner Jeeves. At 125 for 4 with 14 overs left, the job was nearly done. Some blows from Boxer and James Brown saw Chelmer dash to the finish line with 7.5 overs to go, taking top spot on the podium. It was probably a dead heat for the gold medal performance between Griff (steady knock of 19 and then 3 for 14) and Suthers (82 and two top catches), but the same anthem would have been played in any case.
