Hockerill Veteran's v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 07 Aug 2024 at 13-30
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 35 runs
Match report
Eleven Chelmer Veterans crew landed at Hockerill CC, in the shadow of Stansted airport, for a match against Hockerill Veterans.
By a gentlemans' agreement, Chelmer fielded first, as chief pilot Griff had to jet off early to check-in for family duties. A steady take-off by opening bowlers Chris Baker and Paul Marshall saw a measure of control asserted as the pair bowled through the first 16 overs with the score remaining around 3 an over. Wickets were hard to come by despite some turbulence from the surface, with Griff the only bowler to take more than one victim. But at 130 for 5 with 9 overs to go, the Hockerill innings took flight with a super-boosted 57 from no.7 Palfreman (including a few lost balls), reaching a final altitude of 211 for 6 in 40 overs.
After tea, clearance was given for the Chelmer innings to join the runway, and it looked a-ok for the first 5 overs as Chris Sutherby and Melvin John put on a quick 29. Then began a tailspin, with the disastrous run-out of Melvin, who set off without paying attention to the safety instructions and had to return to base. When Suthers fell with the total on 52 in the 13th over, Chelmer never quite regained enough airspeed to keep up with the run rate. Griff and Mark Rynn perished, 79 for 4 with only 16 overs left. Glenn Hylton and Graham Boxer battled hard in a partnership of 66 before Charlie Hylton, unencumbered by the excess baggage of age, put on a lovely aerial display, hitting 22 from 10 deliveries with no dot balls faced. The innings thus ended not entirely rudderless on 176 for 5, Chelmer defeated by 35 runs.
