Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Rainmen on Wed 24 Jul 2024 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wkts

Match report After a string of victories and last seasons mauling of The Rainmen, skipper Griff can be forgiven for expecting another win when winning the toss and electing to bat as expected.
The Chelmer innings got off to a solid start with the returning Suthers scoring regularly and his partner Melvin playing the anchor role for a change. Melvin having reached 26 was then bowled which saw Arslan join his Tillingham team mate Suthers at the crease.
Arslan began his innings as usual with a boundary off his first ball and scored regularly thereafter hitting three big sixes.
With Suthers on 45 and the score on 87 in the sixteenth over he was then bowled which brought Mark Rynn to the crease.
At this point with plenty of batting to come the skipper was confident in posting another imposing total. However the Rainmen, s bowling changes brought dividends and in particular the introduction of Middleton Snr.
With Mark being bowled for 12 Middleton then accounted for Paul Lowe and Adnand for ducks. Graham Boxer then strode to the crease while the remaining batsmen prepared themselves.
It was at this point and with some mutterings amongst the opposition regarding Arslan destructive batting Griff let his generous nature get the better of him and retired Arslan on reaching his 50 and decision that he would later come to regret.
Graham then became Middletons third bowled victim and was replaced by the skipper who played a couple of nice looking shots before being bowled round his legs by the dangerous Middleton for 7.
Brown came and went for another duck which then hailed the unusual sight of Bakes striding out to the middle and scoring 9 before he to departed. This then saw a last wicket partnership between Alan and the return of the previously retired Arslan. With the score on 186 Arslan went for another attempted six but was caught on the long on boundary to become Middletons fifth victim and saw the innings close in the 34th over with Middleton returning impressive figures of 7.3 overs 31-5.
Rainmen being a travelling side draw their players from all over and Griff would be the first to admit he may have under estimated them to a degree.
University graduate Middleton jnr. opened the innings for the visitors and looked an accomplished player. An early wicket for the ever dependable Bakes seemed to endorse Griff, s confidence that 186 would be a winning score and there seemed no reason to change his view having brought himself on to replace Bakes who finished an impressive spell of 8-1-10-1 saw him dismiss the nos 3 with an excellent catch by Melvin. This however proved to be a turning point when the nos 4 Ramsey came to the crease and proved himself to be as accomplished as the young Middleton at the other end as they began eating into the home sides total.
With Middleton on 73 he was caught and bowled by the skipper.
Bond then joined Ramsey at the crease
and despite a number of bowling changes no further wickets fell and the visitors reached their target with five balls to spare and Ramsey ending on 66no. A couple of very decent LBW shouts were turned down in the closing overs and a couple of catches spilled which may have altered the outcome of the game.
However the cardinal sin of not batting out our overs and the generosity of the Skipper Griff probably cost us the game but lesson learnt for the future!
