Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Eastwood Vets on Wed 26 Jun 2024 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 60 runs
Match report
The Chelmer Veterans were relieved when Griff won another toss and chose to bat first on the hottest match day so far this season.
Openers Melvin John and Richard Cory calmly compiled a 53-run partnership before Melvin was bowled for 24 in the 12th over. Mark Rynn joined Cory, and the pair scored freely, adding 104 in 16 overs, Rynn eventually caught for 54, 157 for 2 after 27 overs. Partners came and went trying to push the score along as Cory batted on until reaching his ton and retiring 103 not out (9 fours, 3 sixes, 102 balls). Griff and Graham Boxer ticked along, ending on 238 for 7 with the three wise men, Baker, Oliver and Porter lined up, padded up and ready but not needed, probably a good thing for energy-saving reasons.
Tea taken, Eastwood began their reply, but tight bowling with a wicket each and plenty of dot balls from Chris Baker and Alan Porter, supported with some smart leg-side takes from keeper Ed Oliver, put the visitors on the back foot, 19 for 2 after 12 overs. Inevitably, the middle order batters had to go after the change bowlers, Graham Boxer and skipper Griff, as Eastwood dragged themselves back into the game with a flurry of boundaries. But it was a big task to score the required 9 an over for the second half of the innings, and eventually Glenn Hylton's leg spin tempted Huckstepp out of his crease, stumped by Ed, 154 for 5 with 8 overs remaining. Melvin John bowled a good quicker one to bowl the other set batsman A. Jeeves, and Chelmer were well on top.2 notable catches taken in the field a steepler to Richard Cory which came down with snow on and Chris Baker snaffling a catch at mid on which was hit like a missile but taken with ease by our most senior player. Two stumpings off Melvin John in the 39th over, one an excellent effort off a lifting ball, saw Eastwood slip to 188 for 9, Chelmer eventually winners by 46 runs. Bowling figure of note: Baker 8 overs, 2 maidens, 1 for 27; Porter 6 overs 4 maidens 1 for 6; John 4 overs 4 for 14.
