Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Chippenham CC on Wed 04 Jun 2025 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 40 runs
Match report
Another week, another defeat, another match that even a ten-man Chelmer team could and should have won, another game of regular raising and dashing of hopes.
Batting first after their long journey, Chippenham (Cambridgeshire, not the Wiltshire version) raced out of the blocks, one opener reaching 28 with some big hits before his partner had got off the mark. But his middle stump was pegged back by a nippy James Brown delivery in the 8th over, and Chelmer slowly asserted a measure of control, the run rate gradually reducing until the score was 124 for 4 with only 6.3 overs left. But some batsmen on the youthful end of the veterans scale provided more big hits to finish the 40 overs on 182 for 5, skipper Griff the pick of the bowlers with 7 overs, 1 maiden, 2 for 19.
The Chelmer reply did not start well, losing Melvin John and James Brown with only 13 on the board. Mark Rynn soon followed at 24 for 3, but Mark Stratton and Paul Lowe mounted something of a recovery, reaching 63 in 14 overs when Paul was pinned lbw by one that didn't get up. Griff continued the recovery with Strats, 101 for 4 at drinks (20 overs) and only 4 an over needed in the second session. But Griff was again in the wars, struck a painful blow on the hand by a powerful Strats drive, and disaster struck again when both batsmen were out within five balls on 109. Chelmer's ten men didn't have the fire power required, all out for 142 in 38 overs. First target for next week: field eleven players, but it could be tricky. Please let Griff know if you have any potential guest players up your sleeve!
