Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Eastwood Vets on Wed 25 Jun 2025 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 121 runs
Match report
On an increasingly hot and humid afternoon skipper Griff was surprised when Phil Bartlett playing for his home side Eastwood along with Simon Cooper won the toss but elected to field on a day where he was in need of leaving the arena at the earliest opportunity, much to the constination of his fellow team mates! Both captains agreed to retire batters on reaching fifty in the interest of fair play. So it began with Melvin and Ian Goodrich opening up for the home side. Melvin enjoying his opening slot once again raced to 53 and retiring. Ian was not so lucking and fell on 15 and yes caught by Coops. Sean Elliott once again answering the call to arms blugeoned his way to 51 and then took a well earned rest. Paul who had come in at 4 looked to be getting under way when he also fell to a sharp catch by Coops when in 12.Mark Rynn and Strats who answering a call of help from the skipper both continued to go about batting in a most positive fashion with Mark Rynn trying another reverse sweep was adjudged LBW on 45 and Strats retiring on 50 saw him leave the ground to continue his days work from home. The tail then lost its imputus a little before Paul Marshall crafted a well made 19no and number 11 Alan Porter ending on 4no having hit a straight drive to the boundary fence! The total had reached an imposing 279-6 at the close.
Eastwood started their reply knowing that positive batting would be the only answer if they were to get anywhere near Chelmers total. This was clearly demonstrated by Phil Bartlett who seemed in somewhat of a hurry to get to 50 which did and was then able to leave the field for another engagement elsewhere. The dangerous Huckstepp was bowled by Alan when on 15 which saw Coops/Judas stride to the middle amongst much banter from the Chelmer players. Being the gentleman that he is saw him walk a short time later when he feathered one down the leg side superbly gloved by Rynnie with skipper Griff being the most vocal in appealing. Credit must go to his honesty for walking which is seldom seen in the modern game!
Griff and Paul Marshall then replaced the opening pair and between then tore the heart out of the remainder of the Eastwood batters aided by 2 superb catches by Graham Boxer one a bullet drive plucked out of the air and the second of which saw his pilates classes reaping benefits by leaping skywards at the same time bending backwards to take a catch as the ball was about to enter the adjoining garden catching it before it hit the laurel bushes never to be seen again with only Fullarton 28 and Wade 25no showing any real intent and resolve as for once Griff showed he can actually turn the ball ( Mr Cory😂) ending on 8-0-28-3 and Paul 8-0-32-3 with Alan,s excellent opening spell of 8-1-28-2 going some way to Chelmer securing a victory by 121 runs.
