Billericay v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Thu 17 Jul 2025 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 2 wkts
Match report
In a week when England took it to the last hour of the fifth day in the third test against India Chelmer saw them sharing the facilities at Billericay with the India u/19 squad which included the 14 year old who scored the 2nd quickest hundred in this year's IPL.
On a cloudy very humid afternoon skipper Griff wasn't too disappointed in losing the toss and being asked to bowl first in what should be bowler friendly conditions.
Billericay as usual had a strong looking batting line up which included a colt and seasoned veterans.
Openers Mehotra and Wakefield got their innings off to a quick fire start with two boundaries coming in the first over. With them intent on pushing the scoring along at pace, they then took on the arm of Sean Elliott fielding at deep cover and with a bullet like throw to the Mark Rynn saw Mehotra run out on 18.Grindal the colt coming in at three saw him join Wakefield who then was adjudged LBW to a good delivery from James Brown. Grindal being joined by keeper /batsman Farmer then dragged one back onto his stumps by a Bakes delivery. A dangerous partnership by nos 5 Dohal joining Farmer saw the pair threaten a big score as they both found scoring to all parts of the large Billericay ground. Skipper Griff recognising the need to slow the run rate down called upon the ever dependable Phil Bartlett and Mark Stratton spreading the field accordingly. Dohal then on 46 was c&b by Strats who was struggling with a back problem but continued to give his all. Farmer continued scoring and having reached 72 and looking set for a ton saw Griff go to Sean Elliott with a request for a couple of overs of pace. This reaped dividends which saw Farmer caught at cover by James Brown and whip out two further batters returning figures of 2-1-1-3 just what the skipper ordered.
Billericay who at one stage looked to be heading for a score in excess of 230 then saw them bowled out in 39.4 overs ending on 193.
The Chelmer reply saw Melvin open with Anand who both got off to a steady start. Melvin whilst looking good on 16 was then bowled by Farndon.
Sean coming in at three looked to take the bowlers on with some aggressive hitting and having just cleared the boundary with a six was caught in the deep trying to repeat the feat when on 13.
Mark Rynn joined Anand who both looked to steady the ship with some sensible stroke play which began to pay dividends. Mark then hit one sweetly out of the middle only to see him pick out the fielder at deep mid wicket for 23. Strats then entered the fray at nos 5 but saw him depart just as quickly and now the game was firmly in the balance. Guest Faraday joined Anand who on 43 was caught and with the run rate now having gone out to ten an over looked to be an uphill challenge. Graham did his best but fell LBW on 14 and Faraday likewise for 9.With five overs remaining and 55 still neefed skipper Griff who had taken on scoring duties readied himself to bat at 10.However with Phil Bartlett at the crease and joined by James Brown carrying a lump of willow which carried a price tag of £1000 saw them fight a rear guard action akin to Rorkes Drift with the opposition swarming about them James showed the true worth of his bat with some magnificent big hitting which included three sixes in a quick fire innings of 36 before he to was caught going for another big hit which had seen 23 required off the last two overs.
Griff joined Phil in the last over with five balls remain. A scrambled a leg bye off the first delivery saw Phil back on strike who then managed to hit the next two deliveries for two a piece. It was still anybodys game but with four needed off the last delivery to secure the win the field was spread to all parts. Thankfully the final delivery gave Phil a bit of width enabling him to take a huge swing and saw the ball pierce the field finding the boundary for an outstanding fight back and unexpected win keeping some of the Indian spectators entertained and demonstrating that you are never to old to take part in what is the game of cricket.
