Hockerill Veteran's v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 06 Aug 2025 at 13-30
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 20 runs

Match report Nine Chelmer Veterans made it to Hockerill Sports Club in Beldams Lane for today's fixture. But it must have felt more like Bedlam for skipper Griff, frantically trying to find late replacements. In the end, the kind loan of a distinctly useful player, Paul Elby, took Chelmer to ten men so the game could go ahead.

A winning toss saw Chelmer bat first. Mark Stratton put on 45 with Melvin John before the latter was caught for 20 after ten overs, then he saw partner Mark Rynn fall lbw for 26 on the last ball before drinks, 20 overs, 96 for 2 and Chelmer well placed. The loss of Strats for a skillfully crafted 54 put the visitors on the back foot, the luckless Griff falling at the same score, soon followed by Paul Marshall at 123 for 5 in the 33rd over. But Graham Boxer struck some good blows to push the score to 172 before he was the last man out for 50 with two overs unused. With the pitch behaving unreliably, that score looked at least half-decent.

Griff made the perfect start to Chelmer's fielding effort, taking the new ball himself on the dusty track and bowling out the Hockerill opener first ball. Griff then took two return catches, including the prolific Hockerill captain, 31 for 3 in the 11th over, and Chelmer well in the game. Things did get heated at one point, fortunately fisticuffs were averted, Rynn was not involved, and drinks were taken early while everyone calmed down and skipper Griff sportingly re-instated a batsman given out lbw in error. With things smoothed over, Chris Baker picked up the 4th wicket at 63 in the 20th over with a sharp stumping, and Strats took the 5th at 76 in the 23rd. Griff's third catch, Bakes the bowler, made it 92 for 6 after 28 overs and put Chelmer seemingly on top, but with Alan Porter nursing a leg injury and GBox leaving early, some gaps started to appear in the field. A 50-partnership between Wood and Swain gave Hockerill hope until the latter was bowled by Melvin for a hard-fought 29, 142 for 7, with 31 needed from 3 overs. Paul Marshall kept things tight enough and took a wicket, Melvin took the 9th with another stumping, and by then it was a lost cause as the last batter was run out, Chelmer winning by 20 runs. Mentions in dispatches for Bakes, 8 overs, 2 for 10 and Griff 8 overs 3 for 33 (plus 3 catches)
