Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Bustards cc on Wed 11 Jun 2025 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 36 runs

Match report The Chelmer Veterans season at last took flight against Bustards,(Camb/Hunts county 2nd/3rd eleven) when the twin-pronged approach of fielding a full eleven and batting first produced a great winning performance.

Melvin John and Ian Goodrich shared a solid opening partnership of 84 in 17 overs before the latter was caught for 43 after a good tern at the crease. Melvin soon followed, retired as agreed on passing 50, obliged to wrench himself from the fray at 106 in 20 overs. Mark Rynn's fledgling innings ended for 5 next ball but Simon Cooper and Paul Lowe proceeded to add 60 in 11 overs before Paul fell lbw for 20, after an early reprieve from an eagle-eyed square leg umpire, who spotted that the keeper's gloves had encroached in front of the stumps before the ball was feathered to him. Simon eventually was caught for 45 at 182 for with 5 overs left. Anand Patil and Paul Marshall harrier-ed the bowling to boost the total to 215 for in 40 overs, a competitive score.

With high hopes that Chelmer could avoid parroting previous losing performances, Alan Porter obliged with a clutch of wickets in his second, third and fourth overs, putting Bustards on the back foot early on with two ducks on the card. Anand removed an obdurate opener in his first over, and at 61 for 4 the Chelmer vultures were circling. The cause was not helped when Coops temporarily turned cuckoo-in-the-nest, accidentally launching the ball backwards over the boundary after a good stop, with the look on bowler Griff's face nothing to crow about. New Chelmer injuries were thankfully avoided this week, notwithstanding a scary moment when Mark Rynn swooped down for a firmly hit shot, only for it to leap up and seemingly smack him hard in the beak, but it turned out only to have hit his neck and recovery was swift. Bustards hit a few big shots to the short leg side boundary, forcing fielders to jay-walk among the traffic to retrieve the ball, but Alan Porter returned to finish his spell and claim five wickets, no rookie performance and hopefully not feeling like he was robbin' the batsmen when two of them chopped on. Mark Rynn completed the bowling, tossing the ball high as a kite but landing it on a length, hard to hit away, the innings ending on 179 for 7, Chelmer winning by 36 runs. So it was off to the pub for a pint of Kestrel
