Match report

On an uncharacteristically warm and sunny but windy early season day at Billericay CC, skipper Griff won the toss and backed his instinct that this was an occasion to bat second and chase on a dry, flat track on which Essex 2nd XI had racked up a massive score the previous day.

Somehow, keeper Ed Oliver, arriving later than planned due to bad traffic, managed to have a whole changing room to himself before the game started, but met up with his team mates just in time on the pitch.

Opening bowlers Chris Baker and Alan Porter didn’t bowl many loose deliveries but a combination of true pitch, fast outfield, short boundaries and confident strokeplay left the score at 48-0 after 8 overs, despite each bowling a maiden. It took until the 14th over for the first wicket to fall, Dave Griffiths inducing a lobbed mis-hit that at last fell to a fielder (Kevin Robinson) with the score already on 100, of which outgoing batsman Sood had made 70. This kept the scoring rate down almost until drinks were due, just before which Nilesh Patel removed the other opener, caught by Mark Rynn and then he bowled skipper Smith with the first ball afterwards, a proper drinks-break wicket, 130-3 (21 overs). With Martin Robinson now at the crease the run rate picked up again, the score racing to 229 in 34 overs before he chopped a Gary Thomas delivery on to his stumps having played some good shots for 78 runs. With just one wide bowled all afternoon, only 27 more runs were conceded from the last six overs, Billericay ending on 256 for 6 which represented a pretty decent bowling performance, especially from Gary who mostly pitched the ball near a yorker length and got it to swing taking 1-23 in 6 overs.

After a pleasant tea in the sunshine, Chelmer openers Richard Cory and Simon Cooper began a measured and well-paced reply against accurate opening bowling. Fortunately the change bowlers provided more scoring opportunities and dot balls became a rarity as both batters, untroubled, kept the scoreboard ticking along. Cory was the first to fall, caught behind for 66 (10 fours) at 119 after 19.4 overs. No.3 Mark Rynn quickly played himself in and runs continued to flow with some lovely controlled batting. Simon progressed to a superb chanceless century despite a wrist injury picked up when fielding – but northerners are hard like that! Rynn passed 50 as the winning score drew in sight and fittingly, Simon made the winning hit with 21 balls to spare to end on 126 not out (17 fours) putting on an unbroken 140 for the second wicket with Rynn 62 not out (9 fours).
