Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Eastwood Vets on Wed 08 Jun 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
The game of cricket can literally be decided on the toss of a coin and this was perfectly demonstrated at Rettendon when the away skipper won the toss and didn't hesitate in asking CVCC to bat first. The weather forecast wasn't ideal and with overnight rain resulting in an initial low and slow wicket which the new opening pair of Steve Adams and Paul Lowe found it hard to score fluently but at the 20 overs mark had reached 58 without loss. Shortly after the drinks break Adams was caught trying to accelerate the run rate. This then brought the in form Mark Rynn to the crease and all hopes of another big score were dashed when he was caught and bowled for 4. The wheels then came off when Paul Lowe the skipper and Tony Stratfield were all dismissed in quick succession at the Pavillion end where the ball refused to bounce more than 12 inches at times and the bowler Phil Short returned impressive figures of 8 - 3 - 22 - 4.
Darren Smith hung around for 23no but 113 - 7 was never going to be a winning score. The forecasted showers never materialised and with hot sunshine and a warm breeze blowing most of the afternoon the wicket now favoured batting and so was the case with the openers playing some positive attacking shots finding the boundary on a regular basis reaching the target in 20 overs. On a positive note John Woodrow began to look more like his old self taking three late wickets returning figures of 4 - 0 - 28 - 3.
Thanks must go to Darren who produced another excellent tea even though he spent longer at the wicket than he intended.!
