Two Counties - Over 60's v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 15 Jun 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 67 runs

Match report On what was probably the hottest day of the year so far, Griff thankfully won the toss and condemned Two Counties to swelter in the field first at Elmstead Market.

New opener Chris Southerby may have regretted taking a single off the second ball of the day, leaving Simon Cooper to help himself to 14 runs from the next four buffet deliveries when the first bowler was trying to get his radar right. The quick scoring on a fast outfield continued with both batsmen regularly finding the boundary to reach 80-0 at the first drinks break after 13 overs. The century partnership arrived in the 17th over which also saw the loss of Southerby caught behind for 52, 105-1. The next over saw Cooper depart for the same score, mis-hitting one in the air straight to a fielder. Mark Rynn and Steve Adams started to rebuild the innings before both fell in Martin Southwell's second over, 136-4, Rynn to an excellent return catch. Now it was Paul Lowe and Dave Griffiths' turn to try to get things back on track, Lowe, Robinson and Patel all came and went cheaply but the skipper, after starting with eight singles, began to find the boundary until he was caught in the deep for a useful 27. Guest veteran John Stuck and Chris Baker added a classy 24 in the last 6 overs, Chelmer finishing on 213-8 after 40 overs which felt like a competitive score but at the same time it seemed as though a few runs may have been left in the middle having been 105-0.

Opening bowlers Chris Paker and Nilesh Patel got Chelmer off to a tight start, conceding just 36 from the first ten overs with Nilesh winning an lbw shout along the way. Two more quick wickets fell with only 6 runs added to the score, one a good catch at the wicket by keeper Ed Oliver off an inside edge, the other a well-pouched take at mid-off by Paul Lowe. Martin Robinson bowled his ten overs in one spell taking 3 for 21 which helped to break the back of the Two Counties innings, Oliver managing to locate the ball through the letterbox vision of his helmet and hang on to a very high skyer. With the opposition on 68-6 Chelmer were poised to win but were forced to go the whole distance and dig deep as late partnerships moved the score to 99-7 then 130-8 ending on 146-8 from the 40 overs, Chelmer winning by 67 runs.

Sadly Ed Oliver had to miss the convivial post-match drinks in the evening sun as he had to rush off to his wife's best friend's house in Colchester to supply her with a universal knob (for her broken air fryer) and then flood her small patch of turf with 50 million micro-organisms - so let's hope those nematodes kill off the pesky leatherjackets in her grass*

*also missed his turning off the A12 on the way home thinking up the humorous content!
