Old Markonians v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Wed 06 Jul 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 10 Runs

Match report With a number of regulars unavailable for selection this week subsequently caused the Chairman of Selectors a few sleepless nights as he tried to put together a competitive side for the journey to Bayford Herts to take on Old Markonians. Things got no better on match day when Steve Adams tested positive for Covid thus leaving us with nine players for the journey. The opposition skipper having been made aware of our predicament kindly provided us with A J a younger player full of running which certainly made up for us only having ten in the field!
And so to the toss which Griff again won and had no hesitation in batting first on a warm afternoon.
The wicket had a tinge of green and proved to be a little slow which would see the batsmen working hard for their runs and after a promising start the visitors lost their first wicket with Mark Stratton being bowled on 11. The skipper then joined Paul Lowe at the crease and the pair then put on a partnership of 75 before Griff was caught in the covers for 45. There then followed a mini collapse with the next three batsmen coming and going cheaply before Gary Thomas with a spirited 18 and Chris Baker with 16 added valuable runs towards the end of the innings but it was Paul Lowe who carried his bat ending on 72 no that saw the innings close on a reasonable 192 - 7
The home side then set about chasing the total and after a cautious start runs began to accumulate and after the 20 overs the scores were identical at this stage and the game was set for an exciting conclusion. All of the visitors bowlers worked tirelessly with Chris Baker Alan Porter Martin Robinson and Griff all bowling out their 8 over sand accounting for four of the home batsmen. With the remaining 8 overs and the game still in the balance Griff called upon Gary Thomas and Mark Stratton to close the game out. The key moment came when Gary bowling to the number 3 who was on 72 and looking favourite to see the home side home was superbly caught behind by Ed Oliver and with Mark taking two wickets at the other end saw the home side fall short by ten runs and give Chelmer another well earnt victory on the road.
