Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Old Victorians on Wed 24 Aug 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 38 runs

Match report Yet another hot and humid afternoon awaited the Chelmer Veterans team to play Old Victorians at Stock. Griff's lucky coin delivered yet another wining toss and the home side were spared the ordeal of fielding first.

Openers Chris Sutherby and Mark Stratton raced away, the ball regularly speeding to the boundary across the parched turf. But with the score on 43 in only the sixth over, Suthers, who has recently become something of a jaffa-magnet, duly received another pearler and was bowled for 29. The scoring did not slow down with March Rynn at the crease but he was perhaps unlucky to be bowled for 17 by a grubber from a bowler with what might be described as a 'Muralitheran-style' action, but probably without the benefit of a double-jointed elbow. At 82 for 2 after 10 overs Chelmer seemed to be heading for a big score, but not for the last time in the day the game was to have plenty of ebb and flow. 'Nelson' struck twice at the bogey-number 111, first Paul Lowe was run out for ten thinking the danger was all at the other end, then Griff was bowled for 0 with another skidder. When opener Stratton was sixth out for a well-made 55 out of 134 the innings looked in danger of petering out. 158-8 in the 31st over was not a much better position but Gary Thomas marshalled the tail superbly, adding 40 for the ninth wicket with Ed Oliver and an unbroken 27 for the tenth with Alan Porter (11 n.o.), Gary unlucky not to reach 50 himself ending on 49 not out and what an invaluable knock it was.

It was still pretty hot and humid after tea when Old Vics began their reply and it seemed that Chelmer would have a long toil ahead as the openers began almost as quickly as the home side, 41 for 0 after six overs. At 61 for 0 after ten overs, Vics were up with the required run rate. Nilesh Patel made the breakthrough in his first over, removing opener Blake lbw right back in front of his stumps, then getting no. 3 Ajay Shazad, who had played for Chelmer earlier in the season, holed out first ball, possibly influenced by Gary Thomas's comment 'You're one of us, remember' as he took guard. But a solid 4th wicket partnership wrested back the momentum and took the score to 145, then 33 were added for the fifth wicket making it 178 after 34 overs, which still left Old Vics with a good chance to win. But then came Wayne Morgan's magic over which first featured a direct-hit run out from keeper Ed Oliver stopping a sneaky leg bye, after which Morgan hit the stumps twice to bowl the new batter first ball, then crucially the well-set batsman Wright for 58 which swung the win-predictor right back in Chelmer's favour. Wayne later hit the stumps again and took the tenth wicket with the help of a good catch by Gary Thomas, bowling the Vics out for 187 after 38.3 overs, proving once again that cricket is a funny old game.
