Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Essex Police on Wed 31 Aug 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 100 runs

Match report The Chelmer Veterans team to play Essex Police Veterans looked a strong one, at least on paper, and the home side were once again handed the advantage of batting first when Griff won yet another toss.

Openers Richard Cory and Mark Stratton looked untroubled, adding 45 in the first eight overs against some fairly friendly bowling, until Richard was bowled by a rare swinging delivery that doubtless would have bowled Suthers had he been playing. Mark Rynn hit three quick boudaries before being caught on the offside, unable to keep the ball down in the face of some some variable bounce that was to persist throughout the match. 60 for 2 became 60 for 3 as Stratton fell to the spin of Roper, bowled for 15. With the loss of Paul Lowe at 86 for 4 then Dave Griffiths and Nilesh Patel both out with the score on 102, at six wickets down the innings did not look likely to match earlier expectations. But from here Melvin John batting up the order at no. 5, rescued the situation in partnership with no. 8 Phil Bartlett. Melvin negotiated a quiet period after drinks and the pair added 69 before Melvin was out for a patient and well-constructed 60. 171 for 7 with only five overs remaining meant that the Chelmer score still looked well short. However, as last week the tail had a healthy wag, a quickfire 16 from Wayne Morgan and some big hits from Phil, who faced most of the last four overs with Ed Oliver quickly getting off strike whenever he was on it, meant that the final total was a useful 233 for 9 in 40 overs, Phil finishing on 62 not out (four sixes and five fours).

After tea the Chelmer opening bowlers Chris Baker and Wayne Morgan made a tighter start than had the opposition, Wayne taking the first wicket in the eighth over with the score on 26, as Couchman was tempted to play at one so wide that he could only hit it in the air, caught at cover by Mark Stratton. The policemen's slow progress, with accurate bowling hard to hit away, continued until drinks at the halfway mark when the score was 56 for 3, Baker having added two further victims to his tally, which meant that they were well behind the curve. After drinks, Nilesh Patel snaffled four wickets to end the game as a contest by the time 30 overs had been bowled for 91 runs. A stubborn tail brought Mark Rynn's tempting fare into the attack, but this only yielded one stumping as the police saw out the remaining overs ending on 133 for 9, the bowling highlights being Nilesh's 8 overs, 4 for 12, Wayne's 6 overs 1 for 9 and Phil following up his batting with a steady 6 overs for 16 to give nothing away at the death. A win by a hundred runs was the result of another good all-round team performance.
