Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v East Hertfordshire Cavaliers on Wed 07 Sep 2022 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 124 runs

Match report Due to a late but unavoidable withdrawal it was a ten-man Chelmer Veterans team that assembled at Stock for a 40 over match against East Herts Cavaliers. In fact, on losing the toss, Griff only had nine players present as Nilesh was delayed at the dentist, and East Herts skipper Blake graciously invited Chelmer to bat first, a decision he may have regretted as the afternoon unfolded.

Chelmer have become used to good starts on this summer's flat, dry pitches, and today was no exception. Openers Simon Cooper and Mark Stratton batted superbly, reaching drinks at 20 overs untroubled on 104 with Simon on 40 and Mark 54. The tempo increased after the break with 53 hit off the next five overs, and the partnership only ended on 183 (possibly a Chelmer Vets record) when Mark retired on reaching his ton at the end of the 28th over. Coops batted on to reach 83 when he was bowled but the momentum continued as each batsman got in, Mark Rynn making 22, Griff a quick 14, Mark Taylor 10 not out and Paul Lowe run out on the last ball for 24, but only because he had dropped his bat setting off for the other end. A final total of 269 for 4 from 40 overs looked defendable even with only ten players.

After tea, and forced to rely mainly on spin bowling, Chelmer made a strong start in the field with Mark Taylor bowling a maiden and John Woodrow conceding just a wide in the first two overs. With the bowlers finding turn and bounce, John produced a good one that brushed the batting gloves on the way into Ed Oliver's keeping gloves, 22 for 1 after 6 overs. With the no. 3 bat well caught at slip by Mark Taylor in John's next over, 29 for 2, Chelmer felt the momentum swing their way, confirmed at 62 for 3 when no. 4 AJ Shazad was bowled by Taylor having hit a swift 31, and 63 for 4 when opener Blake nicked a Taylor delivery to be caught behind for 22. Mark finished his nine overs with consecutive wicket-maidens, 9 overs, 3 maidens, 3 for 32. Another two wickets fell with the score still on 63, with six down there was only going to be one winner from here. 86 for 6 at drinks left East Herts with a mountain to climb, and the next few overs were spent viewing the foothills rather than making an assault on the summit, with so much patting away at the ball that Griff turned to flighted fayre merchant Mark Rynn in an effort to winkle out the batsmen. This was a successful move as Mark was rewarded with the wicket of veteran's veteran Roy Jager, who played on for 31 having scored some well-hit fours. Rynn then saw the no.9 bat stumped and the no.10 well caught at the second attempt by Paul Lowe to make it 129 for 9 after 35 overs. The final pair hung on until the first ball of the final over when Mark Stratton delivered the long-awaited coup-de-grace, deservedly bowling the no. 11 for Chelmer to win by 124 runs with another solid all-round performance.
