Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Stort Valley Veterans on Wed 21 Sep 2022 at 12-30
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wkts

Match report Chelmer Veterans last game of the season went ahead in the warm weather we have become accustomed to this year, but only thanks to Mark Stratton who stepped in to offer East Hanningfield & Great Burstead's ground as a venue when arrangements at Rettendon fell through.

Recent rain and short-notice wicket preparation meant that Chelmer, when asked to bat first, found the strip was not quite the flat road of high summer, as openers Simon Cooper and Mark Stratton found it difficult to hit the accurate bowling away. This was a theme of the entire innings which, coupled with unusual bounce off a length made batting hard work. Stratton was first to fall, caught mis-timing one into the air after a breezy (by the day's standards) knock of 22, 27 for 1. Mark Rynn and Cooper batted almost to the drinks interval adding another 27 before Simon was lbw in the 18th over for a patient 9. Plenty of dot balls followed after drinks as Hockerill's change bowlers proved equally accurate as the openers who had completed the first 20 for just 56 runs. Rynn accumulated 20 before another mis-timed aerial shot, and Paul Lowe top scored with 24 until he was stumped. The lower order tried gamely to put bat to ball but only Phil Bartlett had any measure of success ending on 19 not out as Chelmer could only scrape to 123 for 8 from their 40 overs, probably the only occasion this season where the batting hasn't fired, but conditions were difficult and the bowling canny.

Early wickets were required after tea and a tough chance was spurned in the first over as a disappointed Ed Oliver couldn't cling on to a diving one-handed effort to his right off the unlucky Paul Fisk's nicked outswinger. Hopes were raised in the second over when Phil Bartlett's first delivery, a bit of a long-hop, was looped up for Mark Stratton to catch at cover. But it seemed that any demons in the pitch had departed during the tea interval, driven out by the afternoon sunshine as Hockerill made batting look easier than Chelmer had done. Sadly, further missed chances and some of the inevitable 'veteran' fielding let the opposition into the game and they had made good inroads towards the target by drinks, 82 for 3 after Martin Robinson had claimed an lbw and Stratton produced a beauty to bowl the opener for 43. Number 4 bat Elby hit the ball hard and far, scoring a good 51 before another Stratton delivery bowled him. But the damage was done, and although Mark snared another two victims for figures of 6 overs, 4 for 19, Hockerill crossed the line in the 30th over to win by four wickets.

Not the end to the season we were hoping for but its been a good one nonetheless, with some excellent cricket played since it all started back in April.
