Match report After a chilly start to the day, the sun appeared in time for two veteran teams with more than a couple of Kojak hairstyles between them, to enjoy a pleasant afternoon of cricket. It turned out not a bad toss to lose for skipper Griff, Chelmer Veterans being asked to field first.

The police openers made a brisk start reaching 24 from 6 overs before getting stuck in a rut and losing four wickets in the next five overs with no addition to the score as things went from ashes to ashes. In at number 6, Martin Southwell opted for the softly softly approach against some accurate bowling, particularly from Mark Stratton, who returned remarkable figures of 8 overs, 6 maidens, 1 for 6. Batting continued with the gentle touch while further wickets fell to Graham Boxer (3 for 18) and visiting Stock-based Aussie Jared Dowling, who was certainly a boon to the Chelmer line-up. At 52 for 7 the police looked to have had their chips until number nine Roper was able to cannon a few to the boundary to score 40 out of the detectives' final total of 109 for 9 from their 40 overs.

Chelmer Vets were able to enjoy tea in the sunshine with no need for a hart to hart in the dressing room after a good bowling and fielding performance. Our very own Starsky and Hutch, openers Chris Sutherby and Richard Cory began the visitors' reply. Sadly, Cory was out in a heartbeat, caught at mid-off attempting an early big hit. Mark Rynn and Suthers continued like the professionals, adding 51 together in 15 overs before Rynn holed out. Suthers soon followed, bowled by Southwell, who wove his usual web of control as if he had the ball on a shoestring. 64 for 4 at drinks meant that Chelmer still had work to do as police interceptors regularly kept the scoring down and nerves were not yet fully settled at 84 for 5. But Mark Stratton (35 not out) had been quietly going about his business at the crease, and together with Aussie Jared (12 not out) breached the thin blue line, Chelmer eventually comfortable winners by five wickets with eleven overs to spare.
