Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Two Counties - Over 60's on Wed 28 Jun 2023 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 8 runs
Match report
The day started badly for skipper Griff with two late drop-outs leaving Chelmer Veterans with nine men, an S.O.S. was issued but unsurprisingly to o avail at such short notice. The mood did not improve on arrival at the ground to find that the club's only set of keys had mysteriously gone missing, last seen in Paul Lowe's cricket bag - but cricket bags seem to have magical properties for swallowing such items, never to be seen again until the start of the next season. Things improved with the procurement of some spare keys, an offer from Simon Sargent to swap sides (gratefully accepted) and a winning toss, allowing the home side to bat first on a hot, muggy day.
After the frustrating loss of Richard Cory, chopping on at the start of the fourth over, Marks Stratton and Rynn dug in against accurate bowling. Unfazed by three consecutive maidens, the dam burst in the tenth over which went for sixteen runs. From here, Chelmer didn't look back, Rynn scoring freely until attempting one shot, too many, bowled for 19, Paul Lowe enjoying some leg side deliveries until top-edging one to be caught for 15, making it 97 for 3 after 21 overs. Now came a superb partnership between Strats and Griff, adding 101 in 11.2 overs until Strats reached his ton and duly retired (18 fours, 89 balls). Griff took up the cudgels, biffing 80 not out (11 fours, 58 balls), losing Boxer for 6 and Sargent for a quick 20 along the way, baker ending not out with a strike rate of 400 having hit the last ball of the innings for four. 268 for 5 was a better score than seemed achievable earlier, but with a short boundary was probably only slightly above par.
Opening bowlers Chris Baker and Alan Porter made a tidy start, going for only 42 in the first 12 overs, Porter picking up an lbw in his fourth set. Chelmer looked wll on top when Graham Boxer bowled no.3 Warner for 23, Two Counties 67 for 2 after 16 and 81 for 2 at the halfway stage, well behind the run rate. A home win always looked likely with a run-out and then a stumping off Baker to dismiss opener O'Dell for 66, still leaving plenty of runs required. But away skipper Meakin smashed ten sixes to give his side a chance of snatching victory in the final over, only to be caught on the boundary by Cory with one ball remaining, from which Pope was stumped Oliver bowled Stratton, Two Counties ending on 258 for 7, ten runs short. Only eight extras were conceded by Chelmer, which may have proved vital in the end.
