Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Billericay on Wed 09 Aug 2023 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs

Match report Unusually, both teams found room for some younger, distinctly non-veteran players which added some dynamism to the match but was not necessarily responsible for a litany of schoolboy errors that enabled Chelmer to snatch defeat from the jaws of a likely victory - the first error being the writer's failure to photograph the opposition scorebook, so this report may be light on detail. Your correspondent was also the culprit for the next two errors, spilling one difficult and one easier catch at the wicket off each of the opening bowlers, Chris Baker and Alan Porter. Both bowled their eight overs unchanged, tidily keeping the score under control. Chris removed one normally reliable opener clean bowled and the other was run out taking a kami-kazi single against the rocket throwing arm of Jarrod Dowling. Further batsmen came and went despite at least three more reprieves via catching errors in the outfield, but youthful number 5 Haines occupied the crease for long enough to score a valuable 70 in Billericay's total of 159 for 9 from their 40 overs, not a big score but something to defend on a tricky batting surface.

Chelmer openers Chris Sutherby and Simon Cooper made a steady start, putting on 38 before Coops mis-hit one to mid-wicket. Suthers was bowled by a bit of a shooter ay 47, Graham Boxer followed caught at 49 for 3. Jarrod was the senior officer batting with skipper Griff to put on a potentially match-winning 63 runs. Griff's share of these was a patient five before he was caught behind, 112 for 4 with 15 overs left. Jarrod added 12 more while three batsmen fell for consecutive ducks at the other end, and at 124 for 7 Chelmer's hopes rested squarely with the talented Aussie. When he was bowled by a nip-backer from one of Billericay's youths it was down to the tail to try to nudge Chelmer over the line from 126 for 8 with ten overs left. But Baker, Oliver and Porter found it hard even to lay bat on ball let alone hit it off the square, and the target was never really threatened, two more dismissals bowled by low bouncing balls ending the proceedings on 133 all out, as the game slipped away from the home side.
