Match report With Chelmer reverting to their late season home venue at Rettendon CC and the earlier start time fast approaching Griff found himself in a predicament with only six of his side present.
As he and opposition skipper Paul Brown strode to the middle the wicket look a difficult one to read and no one could have foreseen the demons that lurked below.
Without the precursory coin toss Griff was invited to bat first whist awaiting the arrival of the remainder of his 11 which was reduced to 10 on hearing the news that Sean Elliott was having an x Ray on a suspected broken toe suffered during his last game.
Suthers opened the innings as usual with guest batter Dave Hiscock on loan from the Police Vets.
However the fourth delivery by Paul Brown was an absolute snorter rearing to shoulder height which somehow Suthers trying to take avoiding action managed to get an edge with the ball looping into the hands of the slip fielder. Hiscock joined at the wicket by Goodrich (the Rettendon groundsman) followed quickly for a duck and was replaced by Boxer who sadly followed in the same vein. There then followed some frantic activity in the changing room which saw the batting order revised still awaiting the arrival of Mark Rynn and Melvin John.
Griff then joined Ian Goodrich at the crease when a few words were exchanged about the behaviour of the wicket. Perhaps Ian was in a better position than most to know how to deal with batting on it and went on to make 31 while Griff became another victim with a ball that came back and bowled him round his legs for a paltry single!.. 46-5 and with innings in the state of dissaray Phil Bartlett came to the crease and some light at the end of the tunnel with the arrival of Mark and Melvin to shore up the remainder of the batting which had seen Nish and Alan already padded up before their belated arrival!
With Goodrich having been bowled the fight back began with Bartlett forming a good partnership with Rynn who made a battling 21 before being bowled and then the effervescent Melvin John joined Phil with strict instructions from the skipper to bat through the remaining 20 overs ! This was to be the defining partnership as both he and Phil both passed 50..Phil 52no and Melvin 54no which saw the innings end on an unlikely 189 - 6 and Alan announcing that it had been the longest period of time he had ever been padded up for!
With a decent target to defend now Alan and Griff opened the bowling. Alan given the opportunity to run in down the hill couldn't quite work his feet out ( probably because having been padded up for so long had cut the circulation off in his legs). Griff however bowling from the ' Baker End' had one of those days to remember ( if only Cory could have been there to see him turning the ball both ways!!) With only his second delivery he turned one away from opener Adams which saw him edge to a diving Shop keeper Nish at slip to take an outstanding catch! With Nish then replacing Alan he and Griff then literally turned the screws on the Billericay top order. Griff then removed the dangerous Santosh who in an attempt to break the shackles only skyed one into the safe hands of Melvin at mid on. There then followed one of those deliveries that only those present can really appreciate when Griff bowling to the new batsman and old nemesis Astles saw the batsman shoulder arms to a delivery that turned as only an off spinner can dream about and kissing the top of off stump to the complete dismay of Astles who actually congratulated the bowler on his demise..
Griff ended on 8-1-13-3.
Nish also weighed in with outstanding figures of 8-2-13-3 and spin had virtually ' turned' the game in our favour!
Graham replaced Griff bowling a useful spell of 5-0-26-1 and Hiscock taking the final wicket saw Billericay bowled out for 106 with their original opening batter Jarrett unable to take to the field having suffered a nasty finger injury when attempting to take a catch on the boundary from a full bloodied blow from Melvin when he was in full swing.
The season will end with last game on the 27th against the Police so let's wait and see what the pitch has in store 🤔
