Essex Police v Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans on Thu 30 May 2024 at 13-00
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 7 wkts
Match report
On a day that heralded the announcement of the £2.3 million sale of a lost John Lennon guitar, the Chelmer Veterans travelled a not so long and winding road to Galleywood cricket club, where they needed no help in a comfortable win over the Essex Police Veterans.
Dodging the rain for a timely start, skipper Griff lost the toss and Chelmer were asked to bat first, perhaps hopeful that here comes the sun. Tight bowling from Chris Baker and Griff made scoring tricky as the batters were restricted to just 39 runs in the first 15 overs for the loss of one wicket. A blinding catch by Suthers removed the other opener, further reducing the Police's run-gathering options. Melvin John was here, there and everywhere in the outfield, and keeper Ed Oliver made some smart leg-side takes, hopefully showing that he may still be needed when he's sixty-four. There were a couple of quick 'Hello, Goodbyes' for the batting side as occasional spinner Mark Taylor took four wickets, none requiring a little help from his friends, one hit-wicket, one bowled, and two caught and bowled. Essex Police limped along to 121 for 9 from 37.4 overs before rain forced an early tea, all six Chelmer bowlers having done an exemplary job. Spare a thought for the unlucky Simon Cooper, who made a great stop in the field at the cost of a broken collarbone, this in his come-back game after last season's knee injury.
Something must have happened at tea, as openers Chris Sutherby and Melvin John couldn't wait to get back to the middle, where they made batting look easier than it had seemed in the first innings. Steady revolution of the strike in singles, plus the occasional boundary, helped break the back of the chase, putting on 67 in 13 overs before Melvin became the second hit-wicket victim of the day. Suthers starred with a fifty before falling at 103 after 18 overs. Mark Rynn was determined to play a ramp shot, reverse sweep or something, he just wouldn't let it be and was bowled for 19, leaving Mark Stratton and Anand Patil to calmly finish the job for the win, 125 for 3 in 23.3 overs.
