Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club The Midweek Veterans v Rayleigh on Wed 12 Jun 2024 at 13-30
Chelmer Veterans Cricket Club Won by 75 runs
Match report
Following the previous week's less than enjoyable encounter with Old Vics we assembled at Stock to take on Rayleigh Vets. With the toss won by Griff it was ten aside and Chelmer elected to bat on a less than flaming June afternoon.
With Suthers and Impact batter Melvin John making a steady start against some slower than slow bowling Suthers perished on 23 being caught at cover. Melvin was joined by Mark Rynn who then proceeded to punish the bowling with a series of fours. Melvin rode his luck offering a couple of chances which were missed and at the 20 over drinks break had accumulated 60 runs. As the moans from the opposition grew louder and remembering the dissatisfaction from the previous game Griff retired Melvin who was replaced by Paul Lowe who having reached 15 was superbly caught at square leg by a diving Woolf. This brought guest on the day Steve Rynn to join his brother at the wicket. The brothers then plundered some indifferent bowling with some deliveries registering on the local Air traffic control radar! One of those rare occurrences then saw Steve smash a delivery back to the bowler who in taking avoiding action deflected the ball onto the stumps and run out Mark in the process for 42.The skipper then came and went with a leg break delivery bowling him round his legs and Steve Rynn shortly after playing on a delivery from the same bowler.Graham and Phil then closed the innings on 223 for the home side.
In reply some accurate bowling by openers Chris Baker and Phil Bartlett saw pressure build before a brilliant direct hit by keeper Rynn saw the dangerous looking Lennot run out. With scoring falling way behind the desired rate an excellent stumping again by Mark saw the other opener out for 20.
Griff and Gary Thomas then replaced the openers bowling tidy spells before the innings was closed out by Graham and Steve Rynn with the visitors ending on 148 - 5 and a comfortable win for Chelmer by 75 runs.
